Job Overview:
The Communication and Publicity Specialist will play a crucial role in maintaining both internal and external communication strategies. This position is essential for ensuring that project beneficiaries and partners are well-informed about project activities, presence, information, and events. The specialist will lead the production of high-quality communication materials across various media platforms, including social media, and will work closely with project managers and partners. The overarching goal of this role is to enhance access to inclusive, quality, and equitable basic education for children aged 3 to 19 years. This position requires a proactive approach to communication, ensuring that all stakeholders are engaged and informed, thereby fostering a collaborative environment that supports the educational initiatives of VSO.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Develop and implement effective communication strategies that align with VSO’s mission and project goals.
  • Produce high-quality communication materials, including reports, newsletters, social media content, and press releases.
  • Collaborate with project managers and partners to gather information and insights for communication purposes.
  • Maintain and update the organization’s website and social media platforms to ensure timely and relevant information is shared.
  • Organize and facilitate events and workshops to promote project activities and engage stakeholders.
  • Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of communication strategies and materials, making adjustments as necessary.
  • Foster relationships with media outlets to enhance the visibility of VSO’s work and impact.
  • Ensure that all communication adheres to VSO’s branding and messaging guidelines.
  • Provide training and support to project staff on communication best practices. 1
  • Act as a liaison between VSO and external partners, ensuring clear and consistent communication.

Required Qualifications:
  • Proven experience in communication, public relations, or a related field.
  • Strong writing and editing skills, with the ability to produce clear and engaging content for various audiences.
  • Experience in using social media platforms for communication and outreach.
  • Familiarity with graphic design and multimedia production is an advantage.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively with diverse teams.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Knowledge of the education sector and issues related to inclusive education is desirable.

Educational Background:
A bachelor’s degree in communications, public relations, marketing, or a related field is required. A master’s degree or additional certifications in communication or education would be an advantage.

Experience:
Candidates should have a minimum of 3-5 years of relevant experience in communication or public relations, preferably within the non-profit or education sector. Experience working in international development or with marginalized communities is highly desirable.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory. Knowledge of local languages spoken in Uganda would be an advantage, as it would facilitate better communication with local communities and stakeholders.
