Job Overview: The position of Spanish Translator is situated within the Division for Conferences, Languages and Documents (CLD) at UNESCO. The incumbent will work under the authority of the Director of CLD and directly report to the Chief of the Spanish Translation Unit (STU). The primary functions of this role include revising and ensuring quality control of translations, both internally and externally produced. The translator will also be responsible for self-revising translations to meet established quality and productivity standards. The role requires the use of advanced computer-assisted translation tools, including neural machine translation and artificial intelligence-based tools, as well as terminological resources. Additionally, the translator will finalize various types of texts, including summary and verbatim records, and assist in the evaluation and training of freelance translators. The position also involves conducting linguistic and terminological research and contributing to the development of skills related to new translation technologies. The incumbent is expected to make recommendations to enhance the Unit's working methods and linguistic quality, and may lead teams of translators during meetings or participate in drafting groups as needed.
Duties and Responsibilities: The duties and responsibilities of the Spanish Translator include:
Revising and conducting quality control of translations produced by the Unit and external sources.
Translating texts on a self-revising basis, ensuring compliance with quality and productivity standards.
Utilizing computer-assisted translation tools, including neural machine translation and AI-based tools, as well as terminological tools.
Finalizing summary and verbatim records and other types of texts.
Assisting in the evaluation and selection of potential short-term and freelance translators, and providing training and monitoring for them.
Conducting linguistic, terminological, and documentary research as necessary.
Making effective use of relevant language technologies and tools.
Contributing to the development of skills related to new translation technologies.
Making recommendations to enhance the working methods of the Unit and the linguistic quality of its output. 1
Performing other related duties as required by the Chief of the Unit, including leading teams during meetings, working evening and weekend shifts, and participating in drafting or editing tasks.
Required Qualifications: The required qualifications for the Spanish Translator position include an advanced university degree (master’s or equivalent) in translation or a relevant field. Candidates must have at least 7 years of experience in translation, self-revision, and/or revision, with a minimum of 3 years of experience in a governmental or international organization. Additionally, candidates should possess knowledge of UNESCO’s major fields of competence, including education, natural sciences, social and human sciences, culture, or communication and information. Strong IT skills are essential, particularly in relation to computer-assisted translation tools and terminological resources.
Educational Background: Candidates must hold an advanced university degree, such as a master’s degree or an equivalent qualification, in translation or a related field. This educational background is crucial for understanding the complexities of translation and ensuring high-quality output in the role.
Experience: The position requires a minimum of 7 years of professional experience in translation, self-revision, and/or revision. At least 3 of those years must be gained in a governmental or international organization, demonstrating the candidate's ability to work in a structured and formal environment. Experience in finalizing summary and verbatim records is also highly valued.
Languages: The mandatory language requirement for this position is Spanish, which should be the candidate's mother tongue.
