Job Overview:
The Consultant for Translation and Proofreading Services will play a crucial role in supporting the IOM's Labour Migration Programme in Uzbekistan. This position involves translating various migration-related materials from English and Russian into the Uzbek language, ensuring that the content is not only accurate but also culturally sensitive and accessible to the target audience. The consultant will be expected to deliver high-quality, ready-to-publish content within agreed deadlines, adhering to the organization's terminology and language guidelines. The role also includes proofreading and editing translated texts to ensure grammatical correctness and consistency in tone and terminology. The consultant will work closely with the project team, participating in meetings to discuss specific migration and counter-trafficking subjects, thereby ensuring a comprehensive understanding of the topics at hand. This position is essential for aligning IOM's support with government priorities and reducing risks of miscommunication in the context of labor migration.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The consultant will be responsible for the following tasks:
  • Translating various migration-related materials from English and Russian to Uzbek language.
  • Proofreading and editing translated texts to ensure grammatical correctness, contextual appropriateness, and consistency in tone and terminology.
  • Adhering to terminology and language guidelines provided by the organization.
  • Ensuring the delivery of high-quality, ready-to-publish content within agreed deadlines.
  • Incorporating feedback and suggested revisions from the project team.
  • Participating in and/or initiating meetings with IOM to discuss specific peculiarities of migration and counter-trafficking subjects, aiming to ensure a good understanding of the topic, if needed.
  • Evaluating performance indicators for the quality of translated materials and proofreading services delivered.

Required Qualifications:
The ideal candidate must possess a Bachelor’s degree in communications, international relations, public administration, translation studies, political science, or a related field. Additionally, the candidate should have at least 3 years of work experience in written translation services, with proven experience in professional translation and proofreading, preferably within the migration, development, or human rights sectors. Familiarity with labor migration, mobility programs, or development cooperation is considered a strong asset. Excellent written and verbal communication skills in Uzbek, English, and Russian are essential, along with proficiency in MS Office and familiarity with visual content tools such as Canva and Adobe Suite, which is an advantage.

Educational Background:
Candidates must have a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field such as communications, international relations, public administration, translation studies, political science, or a related discipline. This educational background is crucial for understanding the complexities of migration and the nuances involved in translation and communication within this context.

Experience:
A minimum of 3 years of relevant work experience in written translation services is required. Candidates should have proven experience in professional translation and proofreading, ideally within sectors related to migration, development, or human rights. Familiarity with labor migration and mobility programs will be considered a strong asset, indicating the candidate's ability to navigate the specific terminologies and contexts associated with these fields.

Languages:
The position requires excellent written and verbal communication skills in Uzbek, English, and Russian. Proficiency in these languages will be specifically evaluated during the selection process, which may include written and/or oral assessments. While IOM's official languages include English, French, and Spanish, the focus for this role is on the three mentioned languages due to the nature of the work.

Additional Notes:
The position does not anticipate any travel requirements. Any offer made to the candidate is subject to funding confirmation, and the appointment will be contingent upon certification of medical fitness for appointment, verification of residency, visa, and necessary authorizations by the concerned government, where applicable. IOM provides coverage against occupational accidents and illnesses under the Compensation Plan (CP) for the duration of the consultancy, but does not offer evacuation or medical insurance for non-occupational accidents and illnesses. Consultants are responsible for their own medical insurance for non-occupational accidents or illnesses and must provide written proof of such coverage before commencing work. IOM maintains a zero-tolerance policy on conduct incompatible with the aims and objectives of the United Nations and IOM, including sexual exploitation and abuse, sexual harassment, abuse of authority, and discrimination based on gender, nationality, age, race, sexual orientation, religious or ethnic background, or disabilities. IOM does not charge any fees at any stage of the recruitment process and only accepts duly completed applications submitted through the IOM online recruitment system.
