Job Overview: The intern position at UN-Habitat involves supporting the development of technical and normative outputs for Urban Planning projects. The intern will assist in gathering and analyzing data, preparing reports and technical documents, and creating presentations and dissemination materials. The role includes coordinating program/project planning and preparation for medium-sized and complex departmental initiatives, monitoring the status of proposals, and compiling and summarizing information on specific programs and related topics. The intern will also support capacity building on various planning themes and assist in the localization of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) within urban planning policy frameworks. This includes reviewing relevant publications, drafting documents, and producing informational materials. The intern will collaborate with key actors in UN-Habitat programs, draft working documents, and contribute to various written outputs such as background papers, policy notes, and analytical reports. Additionally, the intern will provide substantive support for policy coordination and evaluation functions, assist in planning and implementing events, and coordinate activities related to budget funding and related documentation.
Duties and Responsibilities: The intern will be responsible for a variety of tasks including: supporting the development of technical outputs for Urban Planning projects; assisting in the coordination of program/project planning and preparation; monitoring the status of program/project proposals; compiling and summarizing information on specific programs; supporting capacity building on planning themes; assisting in the localization of SDGs in urban planning; identifying collaboration fields with key actors; drafting working documents; contributing to written outputs; providing support for policy coordination and evaluation; assisting in planning and implementing events; coordinating budget funding activities; and performing other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
Required Qualifications: Applicants must meet one of the following criteria at the time of application: be enrolled in a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent, or higher), be in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor's level), or have graduated with a Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD degree. Candidates should be computer literate in standard software applications, particularly Microsoft Office Suite. A demonstrated interest in the work of the United Nations and a commitment to the ideals of the UN Charter are essential. Candidates should also have the ability to interact successfully with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds and beliefs, showing tolerance and understanding of differing opinions.
Educational Background: The preferred educational background for this internship includes enrollment in a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent, or higher) in fields such as International Relations, International Development, Sustainable Development, Political Sciences, Eco-management, or related areas. Applicants must be students in their final year of a first university degree (Bachelor's or equivalent), Master's, or Ph.D. program, or have completed one of these degrees.
Experience: While applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience, knowledge or experience in the work of international organizations is required. Experience in providing technical and logistical organization for seminars, workshops, and training is considered desirable. This internship is designed to provide practical experience in a professional setting, particularly in the context of international development and urban planning.
Languages: The working languages of the United Nations Secretariat are English and French. For this internship position, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of Arabic is desirable, and knowledge of another UN language is also considered a plus.
