Job Overview: The Associate Investment Officer position within the Financial Institutions Group (FIG) is a critical role that involves working closely with the FIG team to develop and manage investment opportunities in the financial sector across West Africa. The officer will be responsible for engaging with internal and external stakeholders, processing investments, and managing portfolios. This role requires a strong understanding of local markets and industry dynamics, as well as the ability to analyze financial performance and risks associated with potential clients and projects. The Associate Investment Officer will contribute to the development of client strategies and engagement plans, and will play a key role in the identification, appraisal, structuring, and negotiation of financial sector investments. The position is based in Dakar, Senegal, and reports to the FIG Regional Industry Manager.
Duties and Responsibilities: The duties and responsibilities of the Associate Investment Officer include: 1) Collaborating with the FIG team to identify and develop new investment opportunities in the financial sector. 2) Managing relationships with internal and external stakeholders throughout the investment process. 3) Conducting thorough analyses of operational and financial performance, as well as assessing credit and integrity risks of potential clients and projects. 4) Building complex financial models and performing due diligence to evaluate the benefits and risks of transactions. 5) Identifying competitive strengths and weaknesses of projects or portfolio companies, and analyzing non-financial issues and opportunities. 6) Performing assessments related to Paris Alignment and Climate Risk in investments. 7) Articulating the development impact of transactions and IFC’s role in them. 8) Monitoring existing investments and preparing risk ratings and management reports. 9) Supervising junior staff and ensuring the quality of portfolio reporting information. 10) Applying knowledge of project lifecycle to meet critical milestones and implement tasks effectively.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a Master’s degree in finance, economics, or a related field. Accreditation as a CFA or CPA is considered equivalent. Additionally, candidates should have at least 4-6 years of relevant experience in the financial sector, with a proven track record in sourcing, structuring, and closing investments in both equity and debt. A strong understanding of the operations and business drivers of commercial banks, insurance companies, and other financial intermediaries is essential. Candidates should also demonstrate expertise in identifying, evaluating, structuring, and negotiating transactions, as well as experience in portfolio management. Familiarity with IFC’s financial instruments and requirements is highly desirable.
Educational Background: The educational background required for this position includes a Master’s degree in finance, economics, or a related area. Candidates with professional accreditations such as CFA (Chartered Financial Analyst) or CPA (Certified Public Accountant) are preferred, as these qualifications are considered equivalent to a Master’s degree in terms of expertise and knowledge in analysis" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">financial analysis and investment management.
Experience: The position requires candidates to have a minimum of 4-6 years of relevant experience in the financial sector. This experience should include a proven track record of sourcing, structuring, and closing investments, preferably in both equity and debt markets. Candidates should also have experience in portfolio management and a solid understanding of the financial landscape in emerging markets, particularly in West Africa.
Languages: Fluency in English and French is mandatory for this position, as effective communication in both languages is essential for engaging with stakeholders and preparing reports. Proficiency in additional languages may be considered an asset but is not required.
