Job Overview: The position of National UN Volunteer (Youth) - Interpreter is part of the 'Integrated and Scalable Approach to the Mixed Migration Flows by the Borders of Türkiye - Phase I Project.' This project aims to enhance the Turkish government's evidence-based border management and improve mechanisms for processing migrants in vulnerable situations amidst mixed migration flows. The incumbent will provide interpretation services at Istanbul and Sabiha Gökçen Airports, directly supporting the Presidency of Migration Management (PMM) and assisting beneficiaries. The role requires maintaining neutrality during interpretation, providing ad hoc written translations, and adhering to IOM's Standards of Conduct and Confidentiality Agreement. The volunteer will also engage in community activities and promote the UN Volunteers mandate, dedicating part of their time to volunteerism and community engagement.
Duties and Responsibilities: The National UN Volunteer will be responsible for the following tasks:
Provide English-Turkish/Turkish-English interpretation services to the PMM, ensuring neutrality and avoiding personal input during communications.
Offer ad hoc support for written translations between English and Turkish.
Comply with IOM's Standards of Conduct and maintain confidentiality regarding beneficiaries' medical and personal information.
Report any issues or challenges encountered during daily work to management and suggest improvements for efficiency and client service.
Perform additional duties as assigned by the supervisor.
Engage in activities that promote volunteerism and community involvement, such as participating in UNV events and contributing to publications.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess strong communication skills, particularly in English and Turkish, and demonstrate a commitment to the principles of inclusion, integrity, and professionalism. The ability to maintain confidentiality and a professional demeanor is essential. Volunteers should also be adaptable, willing to learn, and capable of working collaboratively within a team. A strong understanding of cultural differences and respect for diversity is crucial in this role.
Educational Background: A minimum of a high school diploma is required, with preference given to candidates who have completed higher education or possess relevant qualifications in languages, social sciences, or related fields. Additional training or certifications in interpretation or translation would be advantageous.
Experience: While prior experience in interpretation or translation is preferred, it is not mandatory. Candidates should demonstrate a willingness to learn and adapt to the responsibilities of the role. Experience in volunteer work or community engagement is a plus, as it aligns with the UN Volunteers' mission.
Languages: Fluency in both English and Turkish is mandatory for this position. Knowledge of additional languages would be considered an asset, enhancing the ability to communicate with a diverse range of beneficiaries.
Additional Notes: This is a volunteer assignment, not an employment position. The UN Volunteer will be responsible for their own housing and living essentials. The current monthly volunteer living allowance is USD 1,088, disbursed in Turkish Lira. Volunteers are also entitled to private health, dental, life, and dismemberment insurance coverage. Additional allowances include an entry allowance of USD 400 and an exit allowance of USD 113 upon satisfactory completion of the assignment. Volunteers will accrue 2.5 days of annual leave per calendar month and have access to various learning platforms and the UN & UNV network. It is important to note that the allowances provided are not to be interpreted as salary or compensation for services rendered.
