Interns will engage in various tasks related to geospatial data management, analysis, and application, contributing to the overall objectives of the GiMS. This internship provides an opportunity to develop skills in GIS software, understand geospatial data, and participate in projects that support the ECA's mission of enhancing statistical capacity in Africa.
Duties and Responsibilities: Interns will be responsible for assisting in the collection, analysis, and interpretation of geospatial data. They will work collaboratively with team members to support ongoing projects and initiatives within the GiMS. Specific duties include:
Assisting in the preparation and maintenance of geospatial databases and datasets.
Conducting spatial analysis and generating maps using GIS software such as ArcGIS.
Supporting the development of web mapping applications and tools.
Participating in team meetings and contributing ideas for improving geospatial services.
Engaging in research activities related to geospatial information and technology.
Communicating findings and results effectively to team members and stakeholders.
Keeping abreast of new developments in geospatial technology and methodologies.
Providing support in the organization of workshops and training sessions related to geospatial data usage.
Required Qualifications: To qualify for this internship, candidates must meet the following criteria: (a) be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor's level) in Geography, Geoinformatics, Environmental Science, Urban Planning, or a related field; or (b) have graduated with a relevant university degree and must commence the internship within one year of graduation. Candidates should possess basic technical skills in GIS software and an understanding of geospatial data formats and applications. Strong communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively in a team environment are essential.
Educational Background: Candidates must have a minimum of a Bachelor's degree in a relevant field such as Geography, Geoinformatics, Environmental Science, or Urban Planning. Enrollment in the final year of such a program is also acceptable. The educational background should provide a solid foundation in geospatial concepts and methodologies, as well as familiarity with GIS software and data management practices.
Experience: No prior professional work experience is required for this internship. However, candidates should demonstrate a basic understanding of geospatial information systems and data analysis. Experience with GIS software, such as ArcGIS, and familiarity with geospatial data types will be considered an advantage. The internship is designed to provide practical experience and learning opportunities for individuals at the beginning of their careers in geospatial science.
Languages: Fluency in oral and written English is required for this position, as it is one of the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. A working knowledge of French is considered an advantage, as it is also a working language of the UN. Additional Notes: This internship is unpaid, and interns are expected to work full-time for five days a week, totaling 35 hours. Interns are responsible for their own travel, visa, accommodation, and living expenses.
