Job Overview:
The Finance Officer plays a crucial role in the Expanding Multi-sectoral Nutrition Financing and Governance in Ethiopia project, which is part of FHI 360’s Alive & Thrive initiative. This position is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day financial and accounting operations, ensuring compliance with donor regulations and organizational policies. The Finance Officer will lead the financial cycle, from transaction initiation to final payment processing, while maintaining accurate documentation and effective financial monitoring. This role also involves analyzing financial data, preparing reports, and providing insights to management and project teams to support informed decision-making. The Finance Officer will actively participate in various accounting projects, including audits and system improvements, and will be expected to build capacity within project teams regarding financial processes and compliance requirements.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Financial Transaction Initiation & Recording: Initiate, process, and record journal entries and financial transactions in compliance with GAAP and donor requirements. Maintain general ledger accounts and reconcile accounts for accuracy.
  • analysis" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">Financial Analysis & Reporting: Analyze financial information, prepare budget forecasts, and compile data for project financial management. Prepare monthly financial reports and balance sheet reconciliations, providing explanations for discrepancies.
  • Compliance & Risk Management: Ensure compliance with donor rules and internal policies. Assist with audit requests and prepare risk assessment reports.
  • Systems & Process Improvement: Implement updated financial information systems and improve workflow efficiency.
  • Capacity Building & Communication: Provide training on financial systems and prepare presentations for diverse audiences.
  • Collaboration & Relationship Management: Develop effective working relationships with project teams and troubleshoot financial issues.
  • Leadership & Subject Matter Expertise: Serve as a subject matter expert on financial processes and contribute to organizational financial goals.

Required Qualifications:
The ideal candidate should possess expert knowledge of federal, state, and local government programs, as well as internal corporate policies and procedures. Proficiency in Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and strong analytical skills are essential. Excellent oral and written communication skills, along with the ability to work collaboratively with diverse teams, are also required. The candidate should demonstrate strong critical thinking and problem-solving abilities, and have a thorough understanding of financial compliance and risk management.

Educational Background:
A Bachelor’s Degree or its International Equivalent in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, Economics, or a related field is required. A master’s degree or professional certification such as ACCA or CPA is considered an added advantage.

Experience:
Typically, a minimum of 8+ years of progressively responsible experience in accounting, finance, and operational management is required, particularly in a government contracting environment. Experience with U.S. Government grants and auditing standards is essential, along with a proven track record of transferring knowledge into operational plans. Substantial experience with computerized financial information systems is also necessary.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory, both written and spoken. Proficiency in the host country language is preferred and considered an asset.

This position is based in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and may require less than 10% travel. The role is full-time and involves working in a typical office environment.
