Job Overview:
The consultant for the World Urban Forum 13 (WUF13) will play a pivotal role in refining the thematic focus of the forum, enhancing its impact assessment framework, and ensuring alignment with UN-Habitat's broader strategic priorities and global commitments. The position involves conducting urban research and analytics to support substantive preparations, coordination, and reporting for the upcoming forum. The consultant will work under the supervision of the ERSKID Director and will be responsible for various tasks aimed at promoting sustainable urbanization and facilitating high-level engagements at the forum. This role is critical in ensuring that the forum effectively addresses the pressing issues of rapid urbanization and its implications for communities and cities.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The consultant's duties and responsibilities include:
  • Conducting research and policy analysis on global monitoring and reporting related to the New Urban Agenda in preparation for the World Urban Forum.
  • Supporting the preparations for the mid-term review of the New Urban Agenda and facilitating global consultations that will be featured at the forum.
  • Providing technical support and curation for high-level ministerial engagements on the New Urban Agenda during the forum.
  • Preparing data, background analysis, and research inputs for the global review of progress with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 11, which focuses on sustainable cities and communities.
  • Assisting in the presentation and review of the global SDG 11 report at the 2026 UN High-Level Political Forum.
  • Coordinating the Global Data Coalition's work in the context of the World Urban Forum, collaborating with relevant partners and stakeholders.
  • Supporting the reporting of outcomes from the World Urban Forum concerning the implementation, monitoring, and reporting of the New Urban Agenda.
  • Backstopping the preparation of the WUF perspectives report as it relates to the New Urban Agenda and SDG 11.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess an advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in fields such as business administration, public administration, economics, urban planning, social science, or a related discipline. Alternatively, a first university degree combined with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree. Additionally, a minimum of five years of varied experience with international organizations is required, particularly in the context of development cooperation, including NGOs, the UN system, and multilateral cooperation. Experience in research, along with knowledge of policy and data analysis, is essential for this position.

Educational Background:
The educational background required for this position includes an advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in relevant fields such as business administration, public administration, economics, urban planning, social science, or a related area. Candidates with a first university degree and additional qualifying experience may also be considered. This educational foundation is crucial for understanding the complexities of urban development and the strategic objectives of UN-Habitat.

Experience:
The position requires a minimum of five years of experience in varied roles, particularly within international organizations. Candidates should have significant experience in the institutional environment of development cooperation, which includes working with NGOs, the UN system, and multilateral cooperation. This experience should encompass research and policy analysis, demonstrating a strong understanding of urbanization issues and sustainable development.

Languages:
Fluency in both written and oral English and French is mandatory for this position, as these are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is considered an added advantage, enhancing the candidate's ability to engage with diverse stakeholders and contribute to the forum's objectives.
