Job Overview:
The position of Online Volunteer for Human Rights Data Analysis involves assisting the OHCHR Regional Office for the Middle East and North Africa in collecting and analyzing open-source information related to casualty tracking amid the ongoing conflict in Lebanon. Volunteers will play a vital role in identifying and reviewing information from various online platforms, including news organizations and social media, to track incidents and gather essential data. This role not only contributes to the broader reporting and advocacy objectives of OHCHR but also provides volunteers with a unique opportunity to enhance their understanding of the human rights situation in Lebanon. Volunteers will engage in initial data analysis, drafting short reports, and triaging information under the guidance of experienced Human Rights Officers. This position is particularly suited for individuals interested in gaining practical experience in qualitative and quantitative analysis methods within a conflict-affected environment.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The primary duties and responsibilities of the Online Volunteer include:
  • Identifying and reviewing open-source information from various online platforms to track individual fatalities related to the armed conflict in Lebanon.
  • Assessing the reliability and credibility of the sources of information.
  • Confirming through assessment whether three independent sources indicate that an individual was killed as a direct result of the armed conflict.
  • Logging findings on a centralized database called OHCHR BASES.
  • Conducting ad-hoc cross-checking exercises to ensure that information is accurately and consistently logged according to the office’s methodological standards.
  • Collaborating with Human Rights Officers to ensure the integrity and accuracy of the data collected.
  • Maintaining organized records of findings and contributing to the overall data analysis process.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates for the Online Volunteer position should possess strong analytical skills and be capable of systematizing data according to specific instructions. They should have a keen eye for detail and the ability to assess the credibility of various information sources. Additionally, candidates should demonstrate a commitment to human rights principles and an understanding of the complexities involved in conflict situations. Familiarity with data analysis tools and methodologies is advantageous, as is the ability to work independently and collaboratively in a remote setting.

Educational Background:
A background in social sciences, international relations, human rights, or a related field is preferred.
