Job Description
Job Posting Organization:
The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) is the lead UN agency focused on reproductive health and rights, established to ensure that every pregnancy is wanted, every childbirth is safe, and every young person's potential is fulfilled. UNFPA's mission is to deliver a world where these goals are achieved, and it operates in numerous countries worldwide, working towards transformative results in maternal health, family planning, and gender-based violence. The organization was operationalized in January 2022, with a self-funded Supply Chain Management Unit (SCMU) that plays a crucial role in delivering life-saving reproductive health products. UNFPA is committed to addressing the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on women's health and rights, and it emphasizes collaboration with member states and organizations to achieve its strategic goals by 2030.

Job Overview:
The intern will work under the direct supervision of the Communications Specialist within the UNFPA Supply Chain Management Unit (SCMU). This role is designed to support the communication team in various aspects of communication and graphic design. The intern will engage in a structured work-plan that outlines specific achievements and learning opportunities throughout the internship. Regular progress meetings will be held to foster a supportive environment that enhances the intern's skills and capacity in alignment with UNFPA's mission. The position is ideal for individuals looking to gain practical experience in communication strategies and graphic design within a global organization dedicated to reproductive health and rights.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The intern will be responsible for a variety of tasks aimed at supporting the SCMU's communication efforts. Key responsibilities include:
  • Assisting in the design and production of visual communication materials such as flyers, brochures, posters, and infographics.
  • Contributing creative ideas for design solutions and campaigns in collaboration with internal stakeholders.
  • Creating visual content for SCMU's intranet platforms using tools like Adobe Illustrator.
  • Developing data visualizations and infographics to enhance reports and communications.
  • Supporting the development and implementation of SCMU's visual brand identity and communication workflows.
  • Assisting in leveraging internal communication channels, including the SCMU intranet on Google Docs.
  • Participating in organizing internal engagement activities, including change management team activities and new staff onboarding.
  • Assisting with recruitment communications.
  • Supporting broader communication efforts aligned with SCMU's strategic framework and work plan.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must meet several educational and eligibility requirements to qualify for the internship. These include:
  • Enrollment in a first university degree program (such as a bachelor's degree) with at least one full academic year completed.
  • Enrollment in a postgraduate degree program (such as a master's program).
  • Recent graduates must start the internship within one year of graduation.
  • Enrollment in a postgraduate professional trainee program, undertaking the internship as part of this program. Additionally, candidates should demonstrate a strong interest in development, possess analytical and writing skills, and have experience working with development agencies, including volunteer work. Proficiency in English is mandatory, and knowledge of other languages is considered an asset. Candidates should also exhibit initiative, sound judgment, and the ability to work harmoniously with diverse teams.

Educational Background:
The educational background required for this internship includes being enrolled in a relevant degree program. Candidates should either be pursuing a bachelor's degree, a master's degree, or have recently graduated with a degree in a related field. The internship is also open to those enrolled in postgraduate professional trainee programs, provided the internship is part of their training. This educational foundation is essential for understanding the complexities of communication and graphic design within the context of UNFPA's mission.

Experience:
The level of experience required for this internship is relatively flexible. While prior experience working with development agencies is considered an asset, it is not strictly necessary. The primary focus is on candidates who demonstrate a strong interest in the field of development and possess the requisite skills in communication and graphic design. The internship is designed to provide practical experience, making it suitable for individuals who are eager to learn and grow within a professional environment.

Languages:
Proficiency in English is mandatory for this position, as it is the primary language used in communication within UNFPA. Knowledge of additional languages is considered an asset and may enhance a candidate's application, particularly in a multicultural organization like UNFPA, where diverse linguistic skills can facilitate better communication and collaboration.

Additional Notes:
This internship is unpaid, and interns do not receive a salary or remuneration from UNFPA. Interns are responsible for their living expenses, accommodation, travel, and other requirements. However, they may receive a stipend to help cover basic daily expenses if they are not financially supported by an institution or program. Interns must also have medical insurance for the duration of the internship, and proof of insurance is required before starting. UNFPA promotes a work environment that values gender equality, diversity, and inclusion, encouraging applications from underrepresented groups. The selection process may involve background checks, medical clearance, and other administrative requirements.
