Job Overview: The internship-position" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">internship position within the Statistics, Data Science, and Survey Section (SDSS) of UNHCR's Global Data Service in Copenhagen offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in the production of statistics related to forced displacement and statelessness. The selected intern will work closely with experienced professionals in the field, contributing to the analysis and presentation of data that informs humanitarian efforts and policy-making. The role involves engaging with a variety of stakeholders, including international organizations, to strengthen statistical partnerships and enhance the quality of demographic data. Interns will also have the chance to develop their skills in data analysis and produce data-driven products focused on vulnerable populations, particularly forcibly displaced and stateless children. This position is designed to provide valuable insights into the workings of a global organization dedicated to humanitarian action and data-driven decision-making.
Duties and Responsibilities: The intern will support the team in various capacities, including:
Assessing the quality of demographic data related to forcibly displaced and stateless individuals and applying statistical modeling techniques to address gaps.
Engaging in the work of the International Data Alliance for Children on the Move (IDAC) to strengthen UNHCR's strategic approach to statistical partnerships.
Contributing to analytical products for IDAC, which may involve research and data analysis.
Assisting in the preparation of workshops and materials, including case studies that review data availability and quality regarding children in relevant systems.
Supporting the development of a capacity-building plan aimed at improving data collection on forcibly displaced and stateless children.
Organizing meetings and drafting minutes to facilitate communication and collaboration within the team.
Performing any additional tasks that support the objectives of the Statistics, Data Science, and Survey Section.
Required Qualifications: To be eligible for this internship, candidates must meet the following criteria:
Be a recent graduate (having completed their studies within the last two years) or a current student in a graduate or undergraduate program at an accredited university.
Have completed at least two years of undergraduate studies in a relevant field.
Not have exhausted the maximum cumulative internship period with UNHCR (8 months for full-time and 12 months for part-time internships).
Candidates with a familial relationship to current UNHCR staff members are not eligible for this internship.
Educational Background: Candidates should ideally possess a Master’s degree in Statistics, Economics, Demography, Sociology, Social Science, or a related field with a strong emphasis on quantitative skills. A solid understanding of statistical and econometric models, including Bayesian hierarchical models, is considered an asset. Additionally, candidates should demonstrate the ability to develop written materials in English, particularly research papers and policy reports based on quantitative analysis.
Experience: The internship is designed for individuals who are either recent graduates or current students, thus requiring no prior professional experience. However, any relevant experience in data analysis, research, or statistical modeling will be considered advantageous. Candidates should demonstrate a keen interest in humanitarian or development action, particularly in relation to forced displacement and migration.
Languages: A minimum proficiency of B2 level in English is required for this position. Proficiency in additional official UN languages would be considered an asset, enhancing the candidate's ability to communicate effectively in a diverse work environment.
Additional Notes: This is a full-time internship position, requiring 40 hours of work per week from Monday to Friday, with working hours from 9:00 am to 5:30 pm. Interns who do not receive financial support from external sources will receive an allowance to help cover living expenses. Travel costs for interns coming from outside Denmark will be reimbursed for their journey to and from the duty station, subject to prior authorization. Internships typically last between two to six months, with the possibility of extension up to eight months for full-time internships and twelve months for part-time internships. Candidates are responsible for obtaining necessary visas and health insurance, and adjustments will be made for candidates with disabilities upon request.
