Job Overview: The Communications Officer will be responsible for leading the strategy, planning, development, and implementation of large and complex communications campaigns. This includes creating impactful speeches, managing social media presence, and executing global promotional initiatives. The role requires collaboration with various UN departments, funds, and agencies to ensure that campaign messages are integrated across all relevant events and products. The incumbent will also identify funding sources for major campaigns and provide expert advice on public affairs issues to senior management. The position involves developing strategic partnerships with key constituencies to maximize the impact of promotional objectives and acting as a spokesperson for the organization. The Communications Officer will prepare a wide range of communication products, evaluate the effectiveness of communications activities, and represent the UN in various meetings and conferences. Additionally, the role includes managing the office's publications program and overseeing the creation of content for digital and print media, ensuring that all materials align with the UN's communication strategy and the Secretary-General's vision.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Communications Officer will take the lead in developing and implementing communications strategies and campaigns. Responsibilities include:
Leading the planning and execution of complex communications campaigns, including speeches and public information programs.
Identifying funding sources and seeking assistance for major campaigns.
Advising senior management on public affairs issues and resolving communications challenges.
Developing strategic partnerships to enhance promotional objectives.
Preparing diverse communication products, including newsletters, reports, and social media content.
Evaluating the impact of communications activities and reporting on trends and attitudes.
Representing the UN in meetings and conferences, organizing media coverage, and arranging interviews.
Building information networks and managing publicly accessible information materials.
Producing materials for various media formats and consulting with UN leadership on communication content. 1
Collecting and analyzing data to inform communication strategies and decisions.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a strong background in public information and communication, with the ability to address a range of issues in the context of political developments and public attitudes. They should have the capacity to conceptualize and implement major information campaigns and handle sensitive situations diplomatically. The role requires excellent writing and oral presentation skills, as well as the ability to produce clear and concise communication products. Candidates should demonstrate professionalism, effective communication, and strong planning and organizational skills.
Educational Background: An advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in communication, journalism, international relations, public administration, or a related field is required. Alternatively, a first-level university degree (Bachelor’s degree or equivalent) with two additional years of relevant work experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree.
Experience: A minimum of seven years of progressively responsible experience in public information, journalism, international relations, or public administration is required. Candidates must have experience in strategic communications, including writing high-impact speeches and briefing notes for senior leadership. Experience in designing and implementing complex communications campaigns across multiple platforms, as well as managing content for websites and social media, is essential. Collaboration with partners to develop compelling global campaigns is also desirable.
Languages: Fluency in English is required for this position, as it is one of the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is considered desirable, enhancing the candidate's qualifications for the role.
