Job Overview: The Research Department of the IMF is seeking a qualified Economist/Senior Economist who specializes in climate policies. This role is crucial as it involves enhancing the Department's work on climate change and mitigation strategies. The selected candidate will be responsible for developing and executing the research agenda related to climate issues, integrating research findings into the IMF's multilateral surveillance products, and contributing to the bilateral surveillance of climate issues within the context of Article IV consultations. The position requires a strong background in climate or environmental economics, combined with a solid foundation in macroeconomics, particularly focusing on structural issues such as long-term growth, industrial policies, and inequality. Duties and Responsibilities: The selected candidate will have a variety of responsibilities, including but not limited to:
Conducting high-quality research on climate policies and their implications for economic growth and stability.
Developing and executing the research agenda of the Structural and Climate Policies Division.
Integrating research results into the IMF's multilateral surveillance products.
Contributing to the IMF’s efforts in enhancing bilateral surveillance of climate issues, particularly in the context of Article IV consultations.
Collaborating with other economists and researchers within the IMF and other international financial institutions to share insights and findings.
Designing and implementing empirical studies related to climate risks and mitigation strategies.
Engaging with diverse audiences to communicate research findings effectively.
Leading projects and initiatives that focus on climate change and its economic implications.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess an advanced degree in macroeconomics, monetary economics, financial economics, public finance, international trade, econometrics, or a related field, along with a minimum of four years of relevant professional experience. Alternatively, a PhD in one of these fields is also acceptable. The ideal candidate should have a proven ability to conduct high-quality research on climate policy, excellent analytical and technical skills, strong writing abilities, and effective communication skills. Leadership qualities or potential are also highly desirable. Competitive candidates will have an extensive publication record in peer-reviewed journals and policy reports, experience working in multilateral institutions, and a deep understanding of climate risks and mitigation strategies.
Educational Background: The educational background required for this position includes an advanced degree (Master's or PhD) in macroeconomics, monetary economics, financial economics, public finance, international trade, econometrics, or a related field. This educational development should be supplemented by relevant work experience, typically acquired through professional roles in research or policy analysis related to climate economics.
Experience: The position requires a minimum of four years of relevant professional experience in the field of climate or environmental economics. Candidates with a PhD are expected to have less experience but must demonstrate a strong research background. Experience in international financial institutions, particularly in conducting climate-related analytical work and contributing to operational engagements, is considered a strong asset.
