The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) is a specialized agency of the United Nations established in 196
  • Its mission is to promote innovation and creativity for the economic, social, and cultural development of all countries through a balanced and effective international intellectual property system. WIPO operates in over 190 countries and has a diverse workforce committed to equal employment opportunities. The organization values diversity and encourages applications from candidates from underrepresented Member States and geographical regions.

Job Overview:
The WIPO Internship Program is designed to provide interns with an opportunity to gain practical experience in an international context while contributing to WIPO's mission. Interns will engage in various tasks that align with their academic background and interests, allowing them to develop professional skills and gain insights into the workings of an international organization. The program is open to individuals pursuing or who have recently completed university degrees, and it aims to enhance their educational experience through hands-on involvement in WIPO's initiatives. Interns will also bring fresh perspectives and knowledge of the latest research in their fields, benefiting WIPO's projects and objectives.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Interns will be assigned specific tasks and responsibilities based on the needs of the Hiring Office. These may include conducting research, assisting in project administration, supporting technical cooperation services, and contributing to various areas such as law, economics, information technology, and communications. Interns are expected to work full-time and actively participate in team meetings and discussions. They will also be required to complete any assigned projects or reports within the stipulated timeframes, ensuring that their contributions align with WIPO's goals and standards.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must be pursuing or have obtained a university degree. For those pursuing a first-level university degree, they should be in their third or fourth year of study or in a program that requires an internship. Graduates can apply for an internship within two years of completing their most recent degree. Additionally, candidates should demonstrate proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and possess good analytical, communication, and interpersonal skills.

Educational Background:
The educational background required for this internship includes individuals pursuing a first-level university degree, particularly those in their third or fourth year, or individuals who have recently graduated. For advanced degree candidates, they should have completed their coursework but not their final thesis, or have obtained their degree within the last two years. This ensures that interns have a solid academic foundation relevant to their internship roles.

Experience:
While specific prior work experience is not mandatory, candidates should demonstrate relevant academic knowledge and skills that align with the internship roles they are applying for. The internship is designed to provide practical experience, so a willingness to learn and adapt is essential. Previous internships or volunteer experiences in related fields may be beneficial but are not required.

Languages:
A working knowledge of English and/or French is mandatory for most internships, with excellent drafting skills in English being particularly important. Knowledge of additional WIPO working languages such as Arabic, Chinese, German, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish would be advantageous and may enhance a candidate's application.

Additional Notes:
Candidates must submit a cover letter or letter of motivation along with their application. Interns are expected to cover their own travel and subsistence expenses and are responsible for arranging their travel, visas, and accommodation. However, interns from developing or least developed countries may be eligible for reimbursement of travel expenses up to a maximum of 1,500 Swiss francs. Internships are not a guarantee of future employment with WIPO, and any subsequent employment will be subject to the organization's recruitment procedures. Internships cannot be conducted remotely, and candidates should be prepared for a selection process that may include interviews and written tests.
