Job Overview:
The UN Volunteer position is situated within UNEP’s Ecosystems Division, reporting directly to the Principal Coordinator of the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration. The Ecosystems Division collaborates with various partners to provide technical assistance and advisory services for implementing environmental policies. The role is crucial in supporting the UN Decade, which was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly to prevent, halt, and reverse ecosystem degradation worldwide. The volunteer will be involved in coordinating activities related to the UN Decade, managing partnerships, and ensuring the quality of secretariat functions for key meetings. This position requires a proactive approach to support the implementation of the UN Decade Action Plan and liaise with various stakeholders to facilitate effective collaboration.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The UN Volunteer will undertake several key tasks, including:
  • Providing coordination support for UN Decade activities and managing current and new Flagships.
  • Establishing and managing partnerships for the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration.
  • Ensuring quality secretariat functions for meetings of the Strategy Group and Executive Board of the Multi-Partner Trust Fund.
  • Supporting the coordination of UN Decade Advisory Board meetings and activities.
  • Assisting partners in implementing the UN Decade Action Plan.
  • Liaising with internal and external stakeholders to support the UN Decade implementation and related processes.
  • Strengthening knowledge of volunteerism and participating in UNV activities.
  • Contributing articles and write-ups for UNV publications.
  • Assisting with the UNV Buddy Programme for new volunteers. 1
  • Promoting online volunteering and encouraging local organizations to utilize the UNV Online Volunteering service.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess strong organizational and communication skills, with a demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a team environment. A proactive attitude towards problem-solving and the ability to manage multiple tasks effectively are essential. Familiarity with environmental policies and sustainable development practices will be advantageous. Additionally, candidates should have a strong commitment to the principles of volunteerism and the mission of UNEP.

Educational Background:
A relevant educational background is required, typically a degree in environmental science, international relations, or a related field. Advanced degrees or specialized training in environmental management or policy will be considered an asset. Candidates should also have a solid understanding of the UN system and its operations, particularly in relation to environmental issues.

Experience:
The position requires candidates to have some level of experience in project management, environmental policy, or related fields. Previous volunteer experience, particularly in international settings or with UN agencies, will be highly regarded. Candidates should demonstrate a capacity for teamwork and collaboration, as well as the ability to engage with diverse stakeholders effectively.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory, as it is the working language of UNEP. Knowledge of additional languages, particularly French or Spanish, would be considered an asset and beneficial for engaging with a wider range of partners and stakeholders.
