Job Overview:
The Youth Summer Fellowship Support position is designed to assist the OHCHR in implementing the UN Youth Strategy, particularly focusing on the Fellowship Programme for People of African Descent. The role involves contributing to the substantive work of the OHCHR's Anti-Racism and Discrimination Section (ARDS) by reviewing applications for the Fellowship Programme, organizing events, and preparing awareness-raising activities. The selected candidate will play a vital role in supporting the launch of the Second International Decade for People of African Descent and commemorating significant days related to the rights of people of African descent. This position requires a proactive approach to research, analysis, and logistical organization, ensuring that the OHCHR's objectives are met effectively and efficiently.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Review and assess applications received for the 2025 Fellowship Programme for People of African Descent, ensuring a thorough evaluation process.
  • Assist in conducting interviews with applicants to select suitable candidates for the Fellowship.
  • Support the logistical and substantive organization of OHCHR events aimed at launching the Second International Decade for People of African Descent (2025-2034).
  • Contribute to the preparation of awareness-raising activities for the International Day of Women and Girls of African Descent (25th July) and the International Day for People of African Descent (31st August).
  • Review written submissions and prepare summaries, providing necessary support for the translation of relevant documents for the Secretary-General's report on the Programme of activities for the International Decade for People of African Descent.
  • Conduct research and analysis to assist the work of UN anti-racism expert mechanisms, contributing to the overall mission of combating racism and promoting equality.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates should possess strong analytical and organizational skills, with a demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a multicultural environment. Proficiency in research methodologies and familiarity with human rights issues, particularly those affecting people of African descent, are essential. The ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, is crucial for this role. Additionally, candidates should exhibit a commitment to the principles of equality and non-discrimination, aligning with the OHCHR's mission.

Educational Background:
A degree in social sciences, international relations, human rights, or a related field is required. Advanced studies or a graduate degree in these areas would be an asset, providing a deeper understanding of the complexities surrounding human rights and anti-discrimination efforts.

Experience:
Candidates should have prior experience in human rights advocacy, research, or program support, particularly in contexts related to racial equality and discrimination. Experience working with international organizations, NGOs, or community-based initiatives focused on the rights of marginalized groups will be highly regarded. Familiarity with the UN system and its mechanisms for promoting human rights is also beneficial.

Languages:
