Job Overview: The director" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">Country Director (CD) for Ethiopia is a pivotal leadership role within CARE, responsible for guiding one of the organization's most significant and complex country programs. The CD will be tasked with developing a strategic vision for CARE's operations in Ethiopia, ensuring that the organization effectively addresses the pressing humanitarian needs while also leveraging opportunities for sustainable development. This role requires a leader who can navigate the rapidly evolving landscape of Ethiopia, fostering partnerships, securing funding, and ensuring that all programs are impactful and accountable. The CD will lead a diverse team of humanitarian practitioners and program managers, promoting a culture of collaboration, integrity, and continuous improvement.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Drive strategy and results by enhancing CARE's operational blueprint in Ethiopia, ensuring impactful programming through partnerships.
Lead and manage a team of 1,300 staff, fostering a positive workplace culture that values diversity and continuous improvement.
Strengthen relationships with local governments, partners, and donors, influencing national and regional agendas.
Collaborate with business development staff to identify and coordinate responses to funding opportunities, ensuring the growth of CARE's portfolio.
Serve as the chief compliance officer, ensuring ethical stewardship of donor funds and adherence to organizational procedures.
Champion CARE's mission and values, promoting equality and social inclusion through rights-based approaches.
Oversee financial and risk management, ensuring operational excellence and team well-being.
Required Qualifications:
At least 8-12 years of experience in leading humanitarian and/or development programs, preferably within global companies or international NGOs with a presence in Ethiopia.
A master's degree in International Development or a relevant post-graduate field.
Proven experience in managing annual budgets of at least $15 million and leading teams of 200 or more.
Strong commitment to diversity and advocacy for women and girls, with experience in programs that promote economic diversity.
Demonstrated ability to identify business opportunities and secure funding from foundations and institutional donors.
Excellent relationship-building skills with government ministries and NGOs, along with the ability to identify new donors and partners.
Educational Background: A master's degree in International Development or a related field is required for this position. This educational background should provide a strong foundation in the principles of development, humanitarian response, and social justice, equipping the candidate with the necessary skills to lead complex programs effectively.
Experience: Candidates should have a minimum of 8-12 years of relevant experience in humanitarian and development leadership roles. This experience should include managing large teams and budgets, as well as a proven track record of successful program implementation in challenging environments, particularly in Ethiopia or similar contexts.
Languages: Fluency in English is mandatory, and proficiency in Amharic is preferred. The ability to communicate effectively in both languages will be essential for building relationships with local stakeholders and ensuring effective program delivery.
