Job Overview: The Programme ManagementIntern will be based in Nairobi, Kenya, within the Global Maritime Crime Programme (GMCP) at the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC). This internship is designed for a duration of six months and is a full-time position requiring a commitment of 40 hours per week. The intern will work closely with the Southern Route and Port Security team, which plays a crucial role in enhancing maritime law enforcement across the Indian Ocean West region. The intern will assist in various capacities, including project planning, technical assistance workshops, and visibility outputs, while gaining valuable experience in international maritime law enforcement and regional cooperation efforts.
Duties and Responsibilities: The intern will undertake a variety of duties, including but not limited to: assisting with the planning and implementation of projects in the Western Indian Ocean Region; preparing for technical assistance workshops, meetings, and high-level events; drafting articles for the website and social media posts; attending meetings and taking notes; supporting monitoring and evaluation (M&E) and reporting processes; providing administrative support for regional missions; contributing to written outputs such as presentations and reports on maritime crime; translating documents and materials; and performing other related tasks as necessary. This role is integral to the success of the GMCP's initiatives and will provide the intern with hands-on experience in international program management.
Required Qualifications: Applicants must meet one of the following criteria: (a) be enrolled in or have recently completed a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in or have recently completed the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent). While professional work experience is not required for this internship, a field of study closely related to the internship is necessary. Applicants must also possess full professional fluency in French and have good knowledge of standard software applications, particularly MS Word, MS PowerPoint, and MS Teams. The ability to draft news articles and social media posts is desirable.
Educational Background: Candidates must be students in the final year of their first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), or enrolled in a Master’s or Ph.D. program, or have completed such programs. Proof of enrollment or completion must be provided with the application, and an official certificate will be required at a later stage. The educational background should ideally be in fields related to international relations, law, public administration, or other relevant disciplines that align with the responsibilities of the internship.
Experience: While no prior professional work experience is required for this internship, candidates should have relevant academic experience or coursework that aligns with the duties of the position.
