Job Overview:
The Senior Political Affairs Officer plays a crucial role in leading political engagement and mediation efforts related to the Sudan conflict. This position involves working closely with Sudanese, regional, and international stakeholders to facilitate a credible political process aimed at conflict resolution. The officer will be responsible for planning and implementing operational activities, which include political affairs, conflict prevention, and civil society support. The role requires a comprehensive understanding of the political landscape in Sudan and the ability to provide strategic advice to senior officials. The officer will also prepare briefing materials, manage relationships with key stakeholders, and oversee research and analysis on political issues. Furthermore, the officer will design and implement initiatives for conflict resolution and peacebuilding, ensuring that gender perspectives are integrated into all activities.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Senior Political Affairs Officer will have a wide range of responsibilities, including: planning and implementing operational activities related to political affairs and conflict resolution; preparing briefing notes and other written materials for senior staff; developing and maintaining relationships with government officials and other stakeholders; managing research and analysis on political issues; designing conflict resolution and peacebuilding initiatives; coordinating and managing programs and projects; representing the office at various events; supporting the development of work programs and budgets; overseeing the work of colleagues; leading data collection and analysis efforts; and performing other related duties as required.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a thorough knowledge of the UN's role in preventive diplomacy and conflict resolution. They should have the ability to analyze complex political situations and provide strategic advice. Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, are essential, as is the ability to build effective relationships with stakeholders. The candidate should demonstrate professionalism, efficiency, and a commitment to gender equality in all areas of work. Additionally, they should be able to manage multiple priorities and work under pressure.

Educational Background:
An advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in political science, international relations, international economics, law, public administration, or a related field is required. A first-level university degree combined with two years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree. Successful completion of programs in data analytics or related fields is desirable.

Experience:
A minimum of ten years of progressively responsible experience in political science, international relations, law, or related areas is required. Candidates must have at least three years of field experience in political affairs within a UN peace operation or similar international organization. Experience supporting senior officials in mediation efforts and political outreach is also required. Additionally, candidates should have experience managing teams and working in Africa, with a preference for those who have dealt with peace and security issues in the Horn of Africa.

Languages:
Fluency in English (both oral and written) is required, as English and French are the working languages of the United Nations. Proficiency in French is considered an asset.
