Job Overview:
The Junior Safety Support Officer position within CERN's Technology Department is crucial for maintaining occupational health and safety standards. The role involves conducting safety risk assessments for various technological processes, ensuring that all prototype devices and machinery conform to safety regulations. The officer will develop compensatory safety measures and follow up on recommended actions, ensuring thorough documentation of all findings. The position will focus on assessing safety aspects related to activities in CERN's technical buildings while the accelerators are operational, making it a dynamic and impactful role within the organization.

Duties and Responsibilities:
As a Junior Safety Support Officer, your primary duties will include:
  • Conducting comprehensive safety risk assessments for a variety of technological processes within CERN.
  • Evaluating the conformity of prototype devices and machinery to safety standards.
  • Developing and implementing appropriate compensatory safety measures based on risk assessments.
  • Following up on recommended safety actions and ensuring that all findings are documented meticulously.
  • Collaborating with the Safety Team to enhance safety protocols and practices.
  • Engaging in continuous learning and professional development related to health and safety standards.
  • Participating in safety training sessions and workshops to improve personal and team competencies.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a solid understanding of occupational health and safety principles and analysis" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">technical analysis methods. Experience in producing safety documentation is essential. Familiarity with risk assessment methodologies and practical experience with content management systems (CMS) such as Drupal or WordPress will be advantageous. Knowledge of the Machinery Directive (Directive 2006/42/CE) is also beneficial. Candidates must be nationals of a CERN Member or Associate Member State and should not have held a CERN fellow or graduate contract previously. A university degree is mandatory, and applicants with a PhD are not eligible for this position.

Educational Background:
The minimum educational requirement for this position is either a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Health, Safety and Environment or a related field. Candidates must have graduated within the last two years to be eligible for this role, ensuring that they are up-to-date with current practices and knowledge in the field of health and safety.

Experience:
The position requires a maximum of two years of professional experience since graduation in a relevant field. This ensures that candidates are relatively new to the workforce, allowing CERN to nurture and develop their skills in a supportive environment. Previous experience in health, safety, and environment roles will be beneficial but is not mandatory.

Languages:
The primary language requirement for this position is proficiency in spoken and written French, as it is essential for communication within the organization. Additionally, candidates should demonstrate a commitment to learning English, which will be beneficial for professional development and collaboration with international colleagues.

Additional Notes:
This position is offered on a contract basis for 24 months, with the possibility of extension up to a maximum of 36 months. The working hours are set at 40 hours per week, with a target start date of September 1, 202
  • A valid driving license is required for this role. The compensation includes a monthly stipend ranging from 5196 to 5716 Swiss Francs (net of tax), comprehensive health coverage for the employee and their family, and various allowances depending on individual circumstances. Employees are entitled to 30 days of paid leave per year and will have access to on-the-job training, formal training at CERN, and in-house language courses.
