Job Overview: The Editorial Coordinator position at CERN is a pivotal role within the Open Research Europe (ORE) platform, which is set to enhance the dissemination of scientific knowledge. The successful candidate will be responsible for implementing editorial policies and processes, ensuring that they align with the governance and standards set by the Scientific Advisory Board. This role requires a strong scientific background and excellent judgment to evaluate the quality of research submissions. The Editorial Coordinator will oversee editorial workflows, collaborate with external partners, and ensure that all editorial standards are consistently applied. Duties and Responsibilities:
Implement editorial procedures for the ORE platform in accordance with established policies.
Ensure consistent application of editorial standards across all submissions.
Adapt policies based on operational feedback and evolving best practices.
Oversee editorial workflows with external partners, managing the process from pre-publication checks through peer review.
Collaborate with the Production team to ensure seamless manuscript processing.
Monitor workflow efficiency and identify opportunities for improvement.
Ensure adherence to publication ethics and research integrity standards.
Monitor the quality of editorial work delivered by external partners.
Implement quality control measures throughout the editorial process. 1
Address complex editorial cases that require expert scientific judgment.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a PhD or equivalent relevant experience in a scientific domain such as Life Sciences, Physical Sciences, or Social Sciences. Specialized training or education in scholarly publishing is considered an advantage. Extensive experience as an academic or scientific journal editor is essential, particularly in interdisciplinary or multidisciplinary publishing environments. Candidates should demonstrate experience in managing peer-review processes and editorial decision-making, along with a proven track record of developing and implementing editorial policies. Familiarity with scholarly publishing standards and best practices, such as COPE, ICMJE, and DOAJ criteria, is required. Hands-on experience with the Open Journal Systems (OJS) platform is also advantageous.
Educational Background: A PhD or equivalent relevant experience in a scientific field is required. Specialized training in scholarly publishing is a plus, indicating a strong foundation in the principles and practices of academic publishing.
Experience: Candidates should have extensive experience in academic or scientific journal editing, ideally within interdisciplinary or multidisciplinary contexts. Experience managing peer-review processes and editorial decision-making is crucial, along with a demonstrated ability to develop and implement editorial policies effectively.
Languages: Fluency in spoken and written English is mandatory, with a commitment to learn French being a desirable asset. Proficiency in additional languages may be beneficial but is not required.
Additional Notes: This position offers a limited duration contract of 5 years, with the possibility of extension up to 8 years and eligibility for an indefinite contract tenure. The role requires a commitment of 40 hours per week and offers hybrid working flexibility. The job grade is classified as 6-7, and the reference for this position is RCS-SIS-OS-2025-275-LD.
