Job Overview: The Gender Affairs Officer will play a crucial role in supporting the integration of gender considerations into the United Nations-African Union partnership in peace and security. This position involves the implementation of UN Security Council Resolutions on Women, Peace, and Security (WPS) across all aspects of UNOAU's operations. The officer will be responsible for executing the UNOAU Gender, WPS Strategy and Action Plan, ensuring that gender perspectives are mainstreamed into the work of various office components. The role also includes supporting initiatives such as 'She Stands for Peace,' managing knowledge and data related to gender policy, and facilitating information exchange among partners. The officer will draft and edit reports, coordinate with other UN agencies on gender issues, and provide technical expertise to enhance gender mainstreaming strategies. Additionally, the officer will contribute to results-based budgeting processes and deliver capacity-building programs focused on gender and conflict analysis.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Gender Affairs Officer will have a diverse set of responsibilities, including:
Supporting the mainstreaming of UN Security Council Resolutions on Women, Peace, and Security into all aspects of the UN-AU partnership.
Implementing the UNOAU Gender, WPS Strategy and Action Plan to ensure gender considerations are integrated into office priorities.
Facilitating the execution of gender-related activities, such as the 'She Stands for Peace' initiative.
Managing knowledge and data collection on gender policy and fostering information exchange among partners.
Drafting, collating, and editing reports and documentation related to gender issues.
Coordinating with other UN agencies and institutions on gender-related matters through participation in working-level mechanisms.
Providing technical expertise on gender mainstreaming strategies and enhancing capacity for gender analysis.
Supporting results-based budgeting processes and contributing to reporting and analysis.
Collaborating on capacity-building programs for gender and conflict analysis and conducting orientation activities on gender mainstreaming. 1

Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a strong understanding of gender issues, particularly in the context of peacekeeping and conflict environments. They should demonstrate the ability to prepare well-written analytical reports and have in-depth knowledge of UN Security Council Resolutions on Women, Peace, and Security. Excellent drafting, monitoring, and reporting skills are essential, along with the ability to formulate policy advice and position papers for senior management. Candidates should also be adept at analyzing and interpreting data to support decision-making and effectively communicate findings to management. A commitment to incorporating gender perspectives and ensuring equal participation of women and men in all areas of work is crucial.
Educational Background: An advanced university degree (master's degree or equivalent) in business administration, management, public administration, or a related field is required. Alternatively, a first-level university degree combined with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree. Successful completion of degree and non-degree programs in data analytics, business analytics, or data science is desirable, indicating a strong foundation in analytical skills relevant to the role.
Experience: Candidates should have a minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in policy advice and program management related to the promotion of gender equality, particularly within international organizations in conflict or post-conflict settings. Experience in integrating gender perspectives into mainstream policies or programs is required. Additionally, experience working in a United Nations common system field operation or similar international organization is desirable, as is experience with the implementation of the Women, Peace, and Security Agenda in Africa. Familiarity with data analytics or related areas is also advantageous.
Languages: Fluency in English, both oral and written, is required for this position. Knowledge of another UN official language is desirable. Fluency is defined as a rating of 'fluent' in all four areas (reading, writing, speaking, understanding), while knowledge is considered a rating of 'confident' in two of the four areas.
