Job Overview:
The internship-position" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">internship position focuses on supporting the project "Leveraging Opportunities for Urban and Infrastructure Systems Transformation". The role involves assisting in the local implementation and financing of Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and facilitating a just transition towards climate neutrality in the economy. This requires strong cities that can take responsibility and possess adequate capacities, financial resources, and instruments to tackle these challenges. The project aims to strengthen international architecture and partnership structures for subnational climate protection measures and infrastructure development, as well as financing climate-friendly buildings and materials. The goal is to improve conditions for climate-friendly investments and the implementation of NDCs at the local level in developing and emerging countries. This will be achieved through the development, dissemination, and scaling of innovative approaches in collaboration with existing initiatives and projects, as well as enhancing strong partnerships. The project team operates from GIZ locations in Bonn and Berlin.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The intern will support the consulting work for the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK) on subnational climate policy topics, including international processes and networks. Responsibilities include monitoring the international landscape of stakeholders and discussions, particularly in the areas of subnational climate financing, energy-efficient and climate-neutral buildings, and multilevel climate action. The intern will assist in the conception, organization, and execution of events and/or workshops, including the preparation of background documents and speeches for events such as the New York Climate Week or COP3
  • Additionally, the intern will help create technical evaluations, status reports, and knowledge products, participate in public relations efforts by developing external presentation materials, internet and intranet contributions, newsletters, and presentations, and contribute to knowledge and document management, particularly in collecting, structuring, and preparing project-relevant initiatives, instruments, methods, and approaches.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates should be enrolled in a university program (from the 3rd semester onwards) in fields such as international relations, economics, political science, urban planning, geography, or similar, ideally with a focus on environmental/climate issues and/or sustainable urban development. Practical experience in international cooperation, such as internships in ministries, international organizations, foundations, or NGOs, is preferred. Candidates should demonstrate initial practical experience or engagement with topics such as energy-efficient planning and construction, climate-neutral buildings, multilevel climate action, urban infrastructure development, and climate financing. Alternatively, a willingness and motivation to engage with these topics is acceptable. Strong knowledge of international climate policy, particularly UNFCCC NDCs, as well as familiarity with processes, formats, and actors in this field is essential. Candidates should possess excellent organizational skills, the ability to work independently under pressure, and enjoy teamwork and analytical tasks. Proficiency in both German and English, with very good oral and written communication skills, is required. Knowledge of an additional language is advantageous.

Educational Background:
The position requires candidates to be currently enrolled in a university program, specifically from the 3rd semester onward, in relevant fields such as international relations, economics, political science, urban planning, geography, or similar disciplines. A focus on environmental or climate issues and sustainable urban development is preferred, indicating a strong academic background in these areas.

Experience:
Candidates should have initial practical experience in international cooperation, which can be gained through internships or work in relevant organizations such as ministries, international organizations, foundations, or NGOs. Experience or engagement with specific topics related to climate action, urban infrastructure, and financing is beneficial, although a strong motivation to learn and engage with these areas can also be considered.

Languages:
Proficiency in both German and English is mandatory, with very good oral and written communication skills required. Knowledge of an additional language is considered an advantage, enhancing the candidate's profile for this position.
