Job Description
Job Posting Organization:
The position is located within the United Nations, specifically in the Special Political Mission 'Panel of Experts pursuant to resolution 2713 (2023)'. Job Overview:
The Political Affairs Officer will functionally report to the Security Council Subsidiary Organs Branch (SCSOB) of the Security Council Affairs Division (SCAD) within the Department of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs (DPPA). The incumbent will be responsible for gathering, selecting, and analyzing information from various sources, including the press, to maintain an up-to-date knowledge of political issues relevant to the Security Council's agenda. This role requires monitoring national and regional political developments that may threaten international peace and security, providing technical and substantive support for the implementation of Security Council mandates, and maintaining contacts with other UN sectors and international organizations. The officer will also participate in missions and provide secretariat services to the Security Council and its subsidiary bodies, preparing meetings for senior officials and performing other related duties as required.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties of the Political Affairs Officer include: gathering and analyzing information from communications and publications; maintaining knowledge of political issues related to the Security Council's agenda; monitoring political developments that could threaten international peace; providing technical support for Security Council mandates; maintaining contacts with UN sectors and international organizations; monitoring actions taken by intergovernmental groups and NGOs; classifying and storing information in databases; participating in Security Council missions; providing secretariat services for meetings and conferences; preparing meetings for senior officials; and performing other related duties as required.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in political science, international relations, law, disarmament, security, development management, conflict resolution, or a related area. Experience working on UN sanctions issues and peace and security issues in Africa is required. Additionally, experience in providing substantive support to the Security Council or its subsidiary organs is necessary, along with experience in drafting formal correspondence and reports for intergovernmental bodies or Executive Boards being desirable.

Educational Background:
An advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in Political Science, International Relations, International Economics, Law, Public Administration, or a related field is required. Alternatively, a first-level university degree combined with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree.

Experience:
The position requires a minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in relevant fields such as political science, international relations, law, disarmament, security, or conflict resolution. Candidates should have experience specifically related to UN sanctions and peace and security issues in Africa, as well as experience in providing support to the Security Council or its subsidiary organs.

Languages:
Fluency in both oral and written English is required, as English and French are the working languages of the United Nations. Fluency in another official UN language is considered desirable.
