Job Posting Organization: CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, was established in 1954 and is one of the world's largest and most respected centers for scientific research. With a mission to uncover the fundamental structure of the universe, CERN employs thousands of scientists, engineers, and support staff from over 100 countries. The organization operates the world's largest particle physics laboratory, where physicists and engineers work together to explore the basic constituents of matter. CERN is known for its cutting-edge research and development programs, and it plays a crucial role in advancing our understanding of the universe.
Job Overview: The position of Electronics Engineer at CERN is designed for hands-on engineers who possess skills in high voltage and analogue electronics, with a keen interest in acquiring experience in radio frequency (RF) power systems. The successful candidate will join the Accelerator Systems Department, specifically within the Radio Frequency Group, which is responsible for the design, construction, and operation of RF systems used in CERN's particle accelerators. This role offers a unique opportunity to work on innovative projects that contribute to the future of particle physics, while also receiving training and mentorship from experienced professionals in the field. The engineer will be involved in designing high power RF systems, simulating and testing electronic circuits, and maintaining RF systems across existing accelerators. This position is ideal for individuals eager to expand their technical expertise and contribute to groundbreaking research in a collaborative environment.
Duties and Responsibilities: As an RF Engineer, the primary responsibilities will include:
Designing high power RF systems for CERN's current and future accelerators, ensuring they meet the required specifications and performance standards.
Simulating, constructing, and testing analog electronic circuits to validate designs and ensure functionality.
Maintaining and testing RF systems across existing accelerators, troubleshooting issues as they arise.
Participating in an on-call service for RF components and systems, providing support during operational hours.
Offering technical expertise and advice to peers and team members, fostering a collaborative work environment.
Leading research and development initiatives in the field of RF systems, contributing to CERN's future projects.
Designing and simulating 3D RF components, utilizing advanced simulation tools.
Ensuring safety protocols are followed, managing procurement and contracts, and preparing relevant documentation for projects.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a Master's degree or equivalent relevant experience in electronics, RF engineering, or a related field. Additionally, they should have demonstrated engineering experience in high-power RF component design, RF system operation and maintenance, and overall RF system design. Familiarity with electronics or RF simulation tools is essential, as well as a strong understanding of RF techniques and their applications.
Educational Background: A Master's degree in electronics, RF engineering, or a related field is required for this position. Equivalent relevant experience may also be considered, particularly in areas related to RF engineering and electronic installations.
Experience: Candidates should have a proven track record of engineering experience, particularly in high-power RF component design and RF system operation and maintenance. Experience with RF component manufacturing and testing, as well as overall RF system design, is highly desirable. Familiarity with electronics or RF simulation tools is also important for this role.
Languages: Proficiency in spoken and written English or French is mandatory. Candidates should be able to understand and communicate effectively in professional contexts in both languages. The ability to draft technical specifications and scientific reports, as well as make oral presentations in at least one of the two languages, is essential.
Additional Notes: This position is offered as a limited duration contract for 5 years, with the possibility of applying for an indefinite position subject to certain conditions. The working hours are set at 40 hours per week, and the role involves participation in regular stand-by duty, including nights, Sundays, and official holidays. The selected candidate will also be required to work in radiation areas and perform interventions in underground installations. A valid driving license is necessary, and due to the occupational health risks associated with this position, medical clearance must be obtained before a contract offer is confirmed. The job grade for this position is 6-7, and the job reference is SY-RF-AC-2025-58-LD.
