Job Overview:
The Major Gift Officer, East is a pivotal role within the High Impact Philanthropy department at Mercy Corps, responsible for securing significant funding to support the organization's global initiatives. This position is designed for a dynamic frontline fundraiser who will manage a portfolio of high-net-worth individuals, primarily located in the Eastern United States, with a focus on Boston and New York City. The Officer will engage in cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding major gifts ranging from $10,000 to $250,000, emphasizing flexible and unrestricted funding. The role requires a strong ability to articulate Mercy Corps' mission and effectively communicate the impact of donor contributions. The Officer will work closely with the Director of Major Gifts to identify new prospects and develop personalized engagement strategies, ensuring that current supporters are retained and upgraded through meaningful relationship-building efforts. This position also involves collaboration with various teams within the organization to enhance the donor pipeline and increase overall revenue.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Manage a regional portfolio of 80-150 major gift prospects capable of contributing between $10,000 and $250,00
  • Cultivate, solicit, and steward major gifts with a focus on flexible and unrestricted funding.
  • Deepen donor engagement through exceptional relationship management and compelling cases for support.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Major Gifts on proactive prospect discovery, utilizing network mapping, research, and executive travel to grow the major gift pipeline.
  • Set annual goals and develop personalized cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship plans for assigned donors.
  • Prioritize personalized touchpoints, including face-to-face meetings and tailored communications.
  • Stay informed about Mercy Corps' priorities and key issues in international aid and development to effectively communicate with donors.
  • Collaborate with a Senior Account Manager to track and measure progress toward financial goals and other KPIs.
  • Actively learn about safeguarding and integrate it into work practices, promoting a culture of openness and communication within the team.

Required Qualifications:
  • A minimum of 4 years of experience in major gifts or private sector fundraising, with a proven track record of soliciting 5- and 6-figure gifts.
  • Ability to develop and implement targeted donor strategies in collaboration with colleagues and leadership.
  • Demonstrated success in relationship building, donor engagement, and upgrading gifts.
  • Passion for Mercy Corps' mission and a solid understanding of international development and humanitarian work.
  • Experience in a global organization is advantageous.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, with strong interpersonal abilities—empathetic, humble, confident, and persuasive.
  • Exceptional organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • Proficiency in using CRMs and databases.
  • A valid driver's license and willingness to travel as required.

Educational Background:
A bachelor's degree in a relevant field is typically required for this position. Advanced degrees or certifications in fundraising, nonprofit management, or related areas may be preferred but are not mandatory. Continuous professional development in fundraising strategies and donor engagement practices is encouraged.

Experience:
Candidates should possess at least 4 years of relevant experience in major gifts or private sector fundraising. A strong history of successfully soliciting significant donations and managing donor relationships is essential. Experience working in a global organization or in international development contexts is a plus, as it provides valuable insights into the complexities of fundraising in diverse environments.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory, as it is the primary language of communication within the organization and with donors. Proficiency in additional languages, particularly those relevant to Mercy Corps' operational regions, is considered a valuable asset but is not required.
