Job Overview: The position of Jardinero/a at CIMMYT is designed for a dynamic, innovative, proactive individual who will work within the Corporate Services Program (CSP). The role is based at the CIMMYT campus in Texcoco, located 45 km northeast of Mexico City. The Jardinero/a will be responsible for maintaining the green areas of the campus, ensuring they are in good condition through manual or automatic irrigation. This position requires a hands-on approach to landscaping and grounds maintenance, with a focus on both aesthetic and functional aspects of the campus environment. The Jardinero/a will also be involved in waste collection, pest control, and basic machinery maintenance, contributing to the overall upkeep and presentation of the CIMMYT facilities.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Jardinero/a will have a comprehensive set of responsibilities, including but not limited to: maintaining ornamental areas, trees, and lawns through appropriate irrigation methods; conducting regular waste collection across the campus using a truck and trailer; manually collecting trash from all containers, including recycling stations; managing bird control within offices and common areas; performing weeding, hoeing, and other maintenance tasks in assigned green areas; applying fertilizers, insecticides, fungicides, and herbicides as necessary; general pruning and leaf collection; replacing ornamental plants, trees, and grass when required; setting up and removing flags; assisting with basic gardening machinery repairs; maintaining plants and pots in corridors as requested; ensuring tools and equipment are in good condition and reporting any failures to the immediate supervisor; detecting and preventing plant and tree diseases or pests and informing the supervisor; blowing leaves from main avenues and assigned areas; operating a pruning tractor for green areas; and supporting other tasks and responsibilities as requested by the immediate supervisor.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must meet the following requirements: completion of secondary education; a minimum of 1 year of experience in a similar position; knowledge of cutting and pruning tools (manual scissors, brush cutters, trimmers, or hedge cutters); familiarity with the use and handling of blowers, chainsaws, machetes, sickles, pruning scissors, and manual or mechanical backpacks; knowledge of chemicals for burning and sealing edges; a valid driver's license, preferably type A; the candidate must be responsible, organized, and maintain cleanliness; must possess a dynamic personality, service attitude, and ability to work in a team; and must have strong manual skills, initiative, and responsibility.
Educational Background: The educational background required for this position includes at least a secondary education. This foundational level of education is essential for understanding the basic principles of gardening and maintenance tasks, as well as for following safety protocols when using tools and chemicals.
