Job Overview:
The Research Assistant - Breeding Operations position at CIMMYT is designed to support scientists in the field of agricultural research, specifically focusing on Dryland Crops such as sorghum, pearl millet, and groundnut. The role involves planting trials and nurseries, collecting data, and managing seed production processes. The assistant will be responsible for supervising casual laborers and maintaining the necessary assets for effective research operations. This position is crucial for ensuring the successful execution of breeding operations and contributing to the overall mission of CIMMYT in enhancing agricultural productivity and sustainability.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties and responsibilities of the Research Assistant include:
  • Data Collection and Organization: Manage accurate and timely data collection at various stages of trials and nurseries, ensuring data accuracy for analysis by scientists. Learn to operate the Breeding Management System (BMS) and/or the Enterprise Breeding System (EBS) for routine operations and data management. Implement digital data capture using relevant tools and software. Coordinate genotyping sampling and shipment.
  • Management of Trials and Nurseries: Ensure timely land preparation and planting according to experimental designs. Apply the correct amount of fertilizers and manage irrigation, weed, and pest control. Oversee the planting and harvesting of nurseries and manage seed multiplication activities as guided by the breeder.
  • Supervision of Casual Labor: Allocate tasks to casual laborers, track attendance, and maintain safety and hygiene standards. Prepare muster rolls for payment processing.
  • Office & Maintenance of Assets: Manage seed inventory and storage, ensure data collection tablets are serviced, and perform checks on irrigation pumps.
  • Other Responsibilities: Assist partners as needed, develop process flows for nursery operations, manage seed counting, packaging, and labeling, and establish contacts with collaborating organizations. Assist in generating descriptor data for research purposes.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess an MSc in Plant Breeding, Physiology, Agronomy, Agricultural Sciences, or Biotechnology. A minimum of two years of experience in managing agricultural field activities or research projects is required, along with a solid understanding of relevant theories, practices, and procedures. Excellent communication and reporting skills are essential, as well as the ability to communicate effectively in both French and English. Candidates should be proficient in standard Windows-based software for word processing, spreadsheets, and presentations, and have the ability to supervise and train field staff.

Educational Background:
The educational background required for this position includes a Master's degree in a relevant field such as Plant Breeding, Physiology, Agronomy, Agricultural Sciences, or Biotechnology. This educational foundation is critical for understanding the complexities of agricultural research and breeding operations.

Experience:
The position requires a minimum of two years of relevant experience in managing agricultural field activities or research projects. Candidates should have a good grasp of agricultural practices and the ability to apply theoretical knowledge in practical settings. Experience in breeding research operations, data collection, and familiarity with legumes and cereal crops will be advantageous.

Languages:
Fluency in both French and English is mandatory for this position, as effective communication is crucial for daily operations and reporting. The ability to prepare brief reports and complete forms without assistance is also required. Additional language skills may be beneficial but are not mandatory.
