The United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) was established to promote economic and social development in the Arab region. ESCWA operates in multiple countries across the Arab region, focusing on issues such as inequality, youth unemployment, and social stability. ESCWA's mission is to enhance the living standards of people in the region and promote inclusive and sustainable development.

Job Overview:
The Social Intern position at ESCWA is designed for individuals who are eager to contribute to the organization's mission of addressing inequality and promoting youth empowerment in the Arab region. The intern will play a vital role in supporting the Josour initiative, which focuses on providing youth with enhanced access to opportunities. This position offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in managing a platform that connects opportunity seekers with job and internship openings. Interns will be expected to engage with various stakeholders, including partners and opportunity seekers, to facilitate effective communication and support. The role requires a proactive approach to problem-solving and a commitment to the ideals of the United Nations.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Interns will be responsible for a variety of tasks, including:
  • Supporting the management of the Josour platform by tracking partner inputs and announcements related to opportunities and events;
  • Assisting partners in updating and posting job and internship opportunities on the platform;
  • Helping opportunity seekers navigate the Josour platform and providing guidance throughout their journey;
  • Responding to inquiries and questions from opportunity seekers to ensure they receive the necessary support;
  • Collaborating with the IT team to address any reported issues on the platform;
  • Performing additional duties as assigned by the supervising team. This role requires strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work collaboratively in a diverse environment.

Required Qualifications:
To qualify for the internship, applicants must meet the following criteria:
  • Be enrolled in a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent, or higher), or be in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum bachelor's level or equivalent), or have graduated with a university degree;
  • Be computer literate in standard software applications;
  • Demonstrate a keen interest in the work of the United Nations and a personal commitment to the ideals of the UN Charter;
  • Exhibit the ability to interact successfully with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds and beliefs, showing willingness to understand and tolerate differing opinions and views. No prior work experience is required for this internship.

Educational Background:
Candidates must be currently enrolled in a relevant academic program or have recently graduated. This could include fields such as international relations, social sciences, development studies, or any other related discipline that aligns with the mission of the United Nations and ESCWA. The educational background should provide a solid foundation for understanding the complexities of social issues and the role of international organizations in addressing them.

Experience:
While no specific work experience is required, candidates should demonstrate relevant skills and knowledge through their academic pursuits or volunteer activities. Experience in project management, community engagement, or social development initiatives would be advantageous but is not mandatory. The focus is on the candidate's potential to contribute to the organization's goals and their willingness to learn and grow in a professional environment.

Languages:
Fluency in English and Arabic is required for this position, as these are the primary working languages of ESCWA. Candidates should be able to communicate effectively in both languages across all four areas: speaking, reading, writing, and understanding. Knowledge of French is considered desirable and would be an asset in this role, as it may facilitate communication with a broader range of stakeholders.

Additional Notes:
This internship is expected to last for a duration of six months, with flexible working arrangements available upon written agreement. Interns must commit to at least two months of full-time work and complete their internship within the six-month timeframe. It is important to note that this position is unpaid, and interns are responsible for their own travel, visa, accommodation, and living expenses. Additionally, candidates must provide proof of valid medical insurance coverage for the duration of the internship and submit a medical certificate of good health prior to starting.
