Job Overview:

The intern will work under the direct supervision of the Regional Coordinator for Environmental Governance in the Regional Office for West Asia. The role involves supporting the team in managing and analyzing data related to environmental governance in the region. Interns will be assigned daily responsibilities that align with their academic background and the specific projects undertaken by the office. This internship provides an opportunity to engage with various stakeholders, including civil society partners, and to contribute to the implementation of UNEP projects focused on law" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">environmental law and governance. The intern will also assist in preparing analytical briefs and summaries that highlight trends and developments in environmental governance, thereby contributing to the overall mission of UNEP.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The intern will have a diverse set of responsibilities, including:
  • Conducting legal and policy research from various sources to support UNEP projects focused on environmental law, access to justice, and governance in West Asia.
  • Assisting in maintaining a shared repository of relevant sources used across research and publications, ensuring that references are organized and easily accessible to the wider team.
  • Preparing analytical briefs and summaries that highlight trends and developments in environmental governance in the region.
  • Supporting engagement with West Asia countries, particularly civil society partners, to strengthen legal and policy dialogue on environmental governance.
  • Assisting in the design and development of innovative representations of data and information.
  • Performing any additional duties and responsibilities as assigned by the direct supervisor, which may vary based on the intern's skills and the needs of the team.

Required Qualifications:
Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent). A field of study that is closely related to the internship is required, such as Sustainability Management, Environmental Law, Environmental Science, Policy and Leadership, Business Management, Governance, Political Science, or other related fields. Additionally, applicants should be computer literate in standard software applications and demonstrate a keen interest in the work of the United Nations, along with a personal commitment to the ideals of the UN Charter.

Educational Background:
The educational background required for this internship includes either being enrolled in or having completed a graduate school programme or being in the final academic year of a first university degree programme. The preferred areas of study include Sustainability Management, Environmental Law, Environmental Science, Policy and Leadership, Business Management, Governance, Political Science, or other related fields. This educational foundation is essential for understanding the complexities of environmental governance and the role of UNEP in promoting sustainable practices.

Experience:
While applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience, it is essential that their field of study is closely related to the internship they are applying for. This ensures that interns have the necessary theoretical knowledge and understanding of the subject matter, which will enable them to contribute effectively to the team's projects and initiatives.

Languages:
Fluency in Arabic and English is required for this position.
