Job Overview: The Project Coordinator / Architect-Restorer will play a pivotal role in the 'Revival of the Grand Théâtre de Beyrouth' project, which aims to restore and reactivate this iconic cultural venue in Beirut. This position requires a deep understanding of architectural conservation and project management, as the coordinator will oversee the preparation, coordination, and implementation of the project phases. The role involves ensuring compliance with UNESCO standards and international best practices while working closely with various stakeholders, including the Ministry of Culture. The coordinator will be responsible for drafting project-related documents, organizing preliminary project phases, and supervising the preparation of design studies and technical documentation. This position is crucial for the successful restoration of the Grand Théâtre, which is envisioned as a vibrant cultural hub that will contribute to the social and economic revival of downtown Beirut.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Project Coordinator / Architect-Restorer will be responsible for a comprehensive set of tasks, including but not limited to: preparing and coordinating all project-related documents required for the preparation and implementation phases; organizing and overseeing the initial cleaning and securing of the Grand Théâtre; establishing a Steering Committee; defining an institutional and governance framework; preparing Requests for Proposals (RFPs) and Terms of Reference (TORs) for consultancy firms; supervising the preparation of design studies and technical documentation; reviewing site supervision and implementation documentation; monitoring project implementation progress; and preparing periodic technical and progress reports. The coordinator will ensure that all works are executed in compliance with approved designs and technical specifications, and will play a key role in community and donor mobilization efforts to raise awareness and attract support for the project.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a university degree in Architecture, complemented by a master’s degree in architectural Conservation from a reputable university. A minimum of 15 years of professional experience following the master’s degree is required, with a focus on cultural development, heritage safeguarding, and project management of cultural heritage conservation and rehabilitation projects. Proven experience in site supervision and management of implementation activities is essential, along with strong project management skills and the ability to coordinate multidisciplinary teams and multiple stakeholders. Experience within the United Nations system and/or UNESCO is required, as well as experience with donor-funded programs/projects in Lebanon.
Educational Background: The educational background required for this position includes a university degree in Architecture, along with a master’s degree in architectural Conservation. This combination of education is essential to ensure that the candidate has the necessary theoretical knowledge and practical skills to effectively manage and coordinate the restoration project of the Grand Théâtre de Beyrouth.
Experience: The position requires a minimum of 15 years of professional experience after obtaining the master’s degree. This experience should encompass cultural development, heritage safeguarding, and project management specifically related to cultural heritage conservation and rehabilitation projects. Candidates should have a proven track record in site supervision and the management of implementation activities, demonstrating their ability to lead complex projects and coordinate with various stakeholders effectively.
Languages: Candidates must have excellent knowledge of written and spoken Arabic, English, and French. Proficiency in these languages is crucial for effective communication with diverse stakeholders and for the preparation of project documentation and reports.
Additional Notes: This is a part-time position requiring attendance of 3 days per week at the UNESCO Beirut Offices. The contract duration is up to 11 months, with the possibility of extension based on satisfactory performance and availability of funds.
