Job Overview: This internship is designed to provide hands-on experience in the field of data and artificial intelligence within the context of the United Nations. The selected intern will work full-time in New York City, supporting the Programme Planning and Budget Division (PPBD) in enhancing decision-making processes through data-driven solutions. The role involves collaborating with various teams to design, develop, and maintain AI and data products that facilitate effective programme planning and budgeting. The intern will engage in tasks such as exploratory data analysis, model design, and the integration of AI systems, all aimed at improving the efficiency and effectiveness of the UN's operations. This position is particularly suited for individuals who are passionate about leveraging technology to drive positive change and support the UN's mission.
Duties and Responsibilities: The intern will have a range of responsibilities, including but not limited to: assisting in the design and prototyping of AI algorithms and data models; contributing to the development of internal tools for data processing and predictive analytics; supporting the creation and optimization of machine learning models; conducting research on innovative AI technologies; performing exploratory data analysis on financial datasets; integrating AI solutions into existing workflows; monitoring and documenting project progress; and collaborating with cross-functional teams to align initiatives with UN priorities. The intern will play a crucial role in enhancing data-informed planning and resource management within the organization.
Required Qualifications: Applicants must meet one of the following criteria: be enrolled in or have completed a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent, or higher), or be enrolled in or have completed the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum bachelor's degree or equivalent). While professional work experience is not required, a field of study closely related to the internship is necessary. Proficiency in programming languages commonly used in AI and data science, such as Python and R, is essential, along with knowledge of AI/ML frameworks and scalable machine learning models. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving skills, and the ability to work independently and collaboratively are also required.
Educational Background: Candidates should be pursuing or have completed a degree in a relevant field such as computer science, data science, artificial intelligence, or a related discipline. The internship is open to students in their final year of undergraduate studies, as well as those enrolled in master's or Ph.D. programs. Proof of enrollment or completion of the relevant degree will be required during the application process.
Experience: While no prior professional work experience is necessary for this internship, candidates should demonstrate familiarity with AI and data science concepts through their academic coursework or projects. Experience with programming languages and AI frameworks will be beneficial and is expected to be highlighted in the application.
Languages: Fluency in spoken and written English is mandatory for this internship, as it is one of the working languages of the United Nations.
