Job Overview: The internship program at the ILO provides a unique opportunity for individuals to gain practical experience in the field of international labor standards and social protection. Interns will be involved in the work of the ILO's Social Protection Department (SOCPRO), which focuses on enhancing the effectiveness and coverage of social protection systems worldwide. Interns will have the chance to deepen their understanding of relevant international issues by directly engaging in the department's work and applying the ILO's principles, programs, and strategies. The internship is designed to help candidates develop their skills and knowledge in social policy, particularly in relation to disability inclusion and social security" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">security systems. Interns will contribute to the department's knowledge products related to disability and social protection, including conducting literature reviews and related research.
Duties and Responsibilities: Interns will be expected to assist in various tasks, including but not limited to: conducting research on social protection systems and disability inclusion; analyzing data and preparing reports; contributing to the development of policy recommendations; collaborating with team members on projects related to social protection; and participating in meetings and discussions to provide insights on disability issues. Additionally, interns will spend 10-20% of their time on administrative tasks, which may include organizing documents, scheduling meetings, and supporting the overall functioning of the department. Interns will also have the opportunity to engage with specialists across different units within the department, fostering a collaborative work environment.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must meet specific qualifications to be eligible for the internship. They should not have any close relatives working at the ILO, and they must not have previously completed an internship at the ILO. Candidates should be enrolled in or have recently completed a Master's or Doctoral program in relevant fields such as public administration, public policy, development studies, law, social policy, economics, econometrics, statistics, social sciences, or a related discipline. A practical knowledge of English, both oral and written, is mandatory, as it is the primary working language of the ILO.
Educational Background: The educational background required for this internship includes enrollment in a Master's or Doctoral program, or completion of such a program within the past year. Relevant fields of study include administration, public policy, development studies, law, social policy, economics, econometrics, statistics, social sciences, or related disciplines. This educational foundation is essential for understanding the complexities of social protection and labor issues at an international level.
Experience: Candidates should have prior experience related to the inclusion of persons with disabilities, whether through research or other relevant exposure. Experience in social protection or international development is highly desirable. Familiarity with qualitative research methods, information technology, quantitative modeling, or applied policy research will be considered an advantage. This experience will help interns contribute effectively to the department's objectives and projects.
Languages: A practical knowledge of at least one of the ILO's official languages (English, French, Spanish) is required. Proficiency in additional languages may be beneficial but is not mandatory. Strong communication skills in the working language are essential for effective collaboration and contribution to the department's work.
Additional Notes: The internship is for a duration of six months, starting on either the 1st or the 15th of the month. Interns will receive a monthly allowance of 2450 CHF, unless they are receiving funding from another institution. If partial funding is received, the ILO will cover the difference to ensure the intern receives the full allowance. Additionally, interns will receive a contribution towards medical insurance costs during the internship period. Candidates from underrepresented or unrepresented member states may be eligible for financial assistance for travel expenses to Geneva. It is important to note that the ILO does not cover any costs related to accidents or illnesses that may occur during the internship, and candidates are responsible for ensuring they have adequate health and accident insurance coverage.
