Job Posting Organization: The International Labour Organization (ILO) is a specialized agency of the United Nations that aims to promote social justice and fair labor practices. Established in 1919, the ILO has a mission to ensure that labor standards are upheld globally, and it operates in over 180 countries. The organization employs approximately 3,300 staff members and works with governments, employers, and workers to develop policies and programs that improve working conditions and promote decent work for all.
Job Overview: The internship program at the ILO provides an opportunity for students and recent graduates to gain practical experience in international labor issues. Interns will engage directly with the work of the ILO and contribute to the application of its principles, programs, and strategies. The internship is designed to enhance understanding of relevant international issues while allowing interns to apply their academic knowledge in a real-world context. Interns will be involved in various evaluation-related tasks, gaining exposure to the implementation of evaluation policies and strategies across the organization. They will work closely with evaluation specialists and participate in the management and execution of credible evaluations, from design to data collection and dissemination. This role is crucial for those looking to understand the workings of an international organization and the political, technical, and administrative aspects involved in labor issues.
Duties and Responsibilities: Interns will be expected to support the ILO's evaluation office in various capacities, including: assisting in the implementation of evaluation policies and strategies; managing and conducting evaluations at different levels; supporting the production and dissemination of evaluation results; participating in the management of knowledge related to evaluations; conducting document reviews and providing support for high-level strategic evaluations; engaging in meta-analysis and studies on program quality and effectiveness; and contributing to the development of evaluation tools and guidelines. Interns should anticipate dedicating 10-20% of their time to administrative tasks, while the remainder will focus on substantive evaluation work.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must meet several qualifications to be considered for the internship. They should not have any close relatives working at the ILO, must not have previously interned at the ILO, and must be enrolled in or have completed a Master's or Doctoral program within the past year. A practical knowledge of English is mandatory, and candidates should also possess strong analytical and writing skills. Familiarity with evaluation methodologies and research methods is highly desirable, along with proficiency in Microsoft Excel and experience with data analysis software such as NVivo or SPSS.
Educational Background: The educational requirements for this internship include being enrolled in a Master's program or having completed such a program within the last year. A degree in social sciences, economics, or public administration is preferred, especially with coursework related to evaluation and applied research methodologies. This educational background is essential for understanding the complexities of international labor issues and the evaluation processes used by the ILO.
Experience: Candidates should have experience conducting research and coursework related to research methods. They should also have demonstrated experience in analyzing socio-economic data and possess strong writing and editorial skills in English, with additional proficiency in French or Spanish being advantageous. Experience in developing and managing databases, as well as knowledge of evaluation methods and the development project cycle, is also beneficial. Previous professional experience in international development, particularly at the national level, is considered an asset.
Languages: Fluency in English is required, along with practical knowledge of French or Spanish. This language proficiency is crucial for effective communication within the multicultural environment of the ILO and for engaging with diverse stakeholders.
Additional Notes: The internship is expected to last between 3 to 6 months, starting on either the 1st or the 15th of the month. Interns will receive a monthly stipend of 2450 CHF, unless they are receiving funding from another institution. In addition, a contribution towards medical insurance costs will be provided. Candidates from underrepresented member states may be eligible for additional financial support for travel expenses. It is important to note that the ILO does not cover any costs related to accidents or illnesses during the internship, and candidates must ensure they have adequate health insurance coverage. The ILO emphasizes diversity and encourages applications from qualified individuals, including those with disabilities.
