Job Overview: The E T Consultant- Trade Specialist position is situated within the Trade Unit (ETIRI) of the Prosperity Vice Presidency at the World Bank. The primary function of this role is to contribute to analytical and technical assistance engagements on trade in services, as well as to support World Bank lending operations related to trade policy issues in low- and middle-income countries. The specialist will advise countries on enhancing their trade performance and market access, particularly in the realm of services trade. This role requires a deep understanding of trade policy and the ability to engage with various stakeholders to promote effective trade strategies.
Duties and Responsibilities: The successful candidate will be responsible for a variety of tasks aimed at broadening and deepening the World Bank Group’s trade policy program. Key duties include: contributing to analytical studies on trade policy, particularly trade in services; participating in Development Policy Lending Operations, Investment Lending Operations, and Technical Assistance Projects related to trade policy; developing new knowledge products and instruments for country work; engaging in policy dialogue with client countries; preparing briefs, presentations, and policy notes; participating in knowledge sharing and learning activities; expanding partnerships with other units and organizations; supporting the Practice Manager with corporate demands; overseeing junior team members and consultants; and presenting the team’s work at knowledge exchange events.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a Master's or Advanced Degree in a relevant field such as economics, trade, or international tradelaw, along with at least 5 years of relevant professional experience in trade and competitiveness issues. Alternatively, a PhD in a relevant field with at least 2 years of relevant experience is acceptable. Strong analytical skills, both quantitative and qualitative, are essential, as well as the ability to conduct independent policy-relevant research and translate theory into practical applications. Candidates should demonstrate expertise in trade in services law and policy, and possess excellent communication skills, both written and oral, with the ability to lead and communicate effectively under pressure.
Educational Background: The position requires a Master's or Advanced Degree in a relevant field such as economics, trade, or international trade law. A PhD in a relevant field is also acceptable, provided the candidate has at least 2 years of relevant professional experience. This educational background is crucial for understanding complex trade issues and developing effective policy solutions.
Experience: Candidates should have a minimum of 5 years of relevant professional experience in trade and competitiveness issues. This experience should include a strong focus on trade in services and the ability to navigate complex trade policy environments. Alternatively, candidates with a PhD should have at least 2 years of relevant experience. The role demands a proven track record of conducting independent research and engaging with stakeholders in the field of trade policy.
Languages: The mandatory language for this position is English. Proficiency in Arabic is preferred, which would be beneficial for engaging with a broader range of stakeholders and enhancing communication in relevant regions.
Additional Notes: The position is a one-year appointment, renewable at the discretion of the World Bank Group, with a lifetime maximum ET appointment of three years. If an ET appointment ends before a full year, it is considered as a full year toward the lifetime maximum. The selected candidate must be willing to travel extensively, including to remote and conflict-affected areas if required.
