Job Posting Organization: The International Labour Organization (ILO) is a specialized agency of the United Nations that aims to promote social justice and fair labor practices worldwide. Established in 1919, the ILO has a mission to ensure that labor standards are upheld and that workers' rights are protected. The organization operates in over 180 countries and has a diverse workforce of approximately 3,300 employees. The ILO is committed to promoting decent work for all, which includes creating job opportunities, enhancing social protection, and promoting rights at work.
Job Overview: The internship program at the ILO provides an opportunity for individuals to gain practical experience in international labor issues while contributing to the organization's mission. Interns will engage directly in the work of the ILO and apply its principles, programs, and strategies. The internship is designed to enhance understanding of global labor issues and provide hands-on experience related to the intern's field of study. Interns will be involved in various projects and initiatives that focus on skills development, youth employability, and lifelong learning, contributing to the ILO's efforts in promoting inclusive and sustainable employment policies.
Duties and Responsibilities: Interns will support the design and implementation of high-level policy guidance documents aimed at assisting member states in adapting ILO's international labor standards on skills for employment. Responsibilities include conducting comparative analysis of national skills policies, assisting in the development of research products, and supporting the transformation of skills systems in response to digital and green transitions. Interns will also help in developing strategies for financing skills development, promoting the inclusion of persons with disabilities in education and employment, and documenting best practices. Participation in workshops, seminars, and preparation of reports and presentations will also be part of the role, alongside administrative tasks that may take up 10-20% of their time.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must have a strong analytical and writing ability, with the capacity to produce high-quality written materials, including presentations and reports. Good communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively in a team are essential. Interns should demonstrate strong time management skills, be able to anticipate requirements and manage competing priorities effectively, and work under tight deadlines. Autonomy, self-motivation, and the ability to work in a multicultural and multilingual environment are also important. Additionally, candidates must not have any close relatives working at the ILO and should not have previously interned at the organization.
Educational Background: Candidates must hold at least a first-level degree in Economics, Social Sciences, Human Resource Development, Development Studies, International Relations, or a related field. They should be enrolled in a master's or doctoral program or have completed such a program within the last year. A practical knowledge of English, both oral and written, is mandatory for this position.
Experience: Relevant professional experience in skills and lifelong learning, communication, and familiarity with social media and communication applications is required. Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint is also necessary to perform the tasks effectively.
Languages: Fluency in English is mandatory. Candidates who are proficient in at least one of the other official ILO languages (French or Spanish) will have an advantage in the selection process.
Additional Notes: This internship opportunity is specifically limited to candidates with disabilities. The internship contract will last for six months, starting on either the 1st or 15th of the month. Interns will receive a monthly stipend of 2450 CHF, unless they receive funding from another institution. Additionally, a contribution of 45 CHF per month will be provided to cover medical insurance expenses during the internship. Candidates from underrepresented countries may be eligible for financial assistance for travel expenses to Geneva. It is important to note that the ILO does not charge any fees during the application process and does not require candidates to provide bank details.
