Job Overview:
The Environmental Engineer position at the World Bank involves overseeing and supporting compliance with the World Bank Group's safeguards policies and Environmental and Social Framework (ESF). The role is crucial in ensuring that environmental sustainability is integrated into project design and implementation. The selected candidate will work closely with various stakeholders, including clients and project teams, to provide expert advice on environmental risk management in World Bank-financed projects. This position requires a proactive approach to integrating environmental considerations into project planning and execution, ensuring that all environmental assessments and management plans are thorough and compliant with operational policies. The Environmental Engineer will also be responsible for capacity building and technical training related to environmental risk management, contributing to the overall mission of promoting sustainable development in the South Asia region.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Environmental Engineer will report to the SAR SSAE1 Practice Manager and the Country Environmental and Social Framework (ESF) Focal Point. Key responsibilities include:
  • Advising clients on environmental risk management in World Bank-financed projects.
  • Collaborating with the ESF Country Focal Point to integrate environmental due diligence into project design and implementation.
  • Preparing and reviewing environmental assessments, including environmental impact assessments and strategic assessments.
  • Ensuring compliance with disclosure procedures and public consultation requirements for environmental assessments.
  • Guiding clients in tendering and contracting specialized consultant services for environmental risk assessment.
  • Providing technical training and capacity building on environmental risk management and WBG safeguard policies.
  • Participating in project identification missions and enhancing client understanding of environmental policies.
  • Maintaining regular communication with clients and contributing to mission outputs and reports.
  • Performing other related assignments as required.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess an advanced degree (PhD or Masters) in environmental engineering, environmental science, natural resource management, or related fields. A minimum of five years of relevant professional experience in environmental risk management is required. Candidates should have knowledge and experience in environmental assessment and management of investment projects, particularly those involving large-scale civil works or industrial activities. Field experience in assessing project site vulnerabilities and supervising projects with significant environmental risks is essential. Strong interpersonal and communication skills are necessary, along with the ability to work collaboratively in diverse cultural contexts and independently with limited supervision.

Educational Background:
The position requires an advanced degree, either a PhD or a Master's degree, in environmental engineering, environmental science, natural resource management, or a related field. This educational background is critical for understanding the complexities of environmental assessments and the technical aspects of environmental risk management.

Experience:
Candidates should have a minimum of five years of full-time relevant professional experience in the environmental risk management sector. This experience should include knowledge of environmental assessment processes and the management of investment projects that involve significant environmental considerations. Field experience is particularly valuable, as it demonstrates the ability to assess vulnerabilities and monitor projects effectively during implementation.

Languages:
The mandatory languages for this position are English and Hindi. Proficiency in these languages is essential for effective communication with clients and stakeholders. Additional language skills may be advantageous but are not explicitly required.
