Job Overview:
The Data Analyst position is part of the Global Environment Facility (GEF), which is a multilateral financial mechanism established in 199
  • The GEF aims to provide grants and concessional funds to countries for projects addressing critical environmental issues such as biodiversity loss, climate change, and pollution. The selected candidate will join the GEF’s Data and Analytics team, focusing on strategic data analytics to enhance the GEF's international positioning as an environmental partner. The role involves conducting quantitative data mining, maximizing the impact of GEF programming through evidence-based perspectives, and supporting the GEF replenishment processes. The Data Analyst will be responsible for identifying, collecting, analyzing, and managing data from various sources to inform decision-making and support the GEF's strategic objectives.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Data Analyst will have a diverse set of responsibilities, including:
  • Identifying, collecting, and managing data from internal databases (such as the GEF Portal) and external environmental and development indices.
  • Performing quantitative and qualitative analyses, data visualization, and report writing to support strategic analytical work.
  • Building compelling narratives for country profiles and the GEF portfolio to position the GEF as a leader in environmental outcomes.
  • Creating and assessing relevant environmental and economic indices, collaborating with technical teams to manage datasets.
  • Conducting technical reviews of global reports and assessments relevant to the GEF's work.
  • Supporting internal analyses of GEF projects to collate evidence on the impact of GEF investments.
  • Assisting in the organization of international seminars and discussions on pertinent themes.
  • Supporting the CEO’s Advisor and the Data and Analytics team with additional tasks as required.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a Master’s degree in Environmental Economics, Data Science, Statistics, Environmental Management, Sustainable Development, or a related field, along with at least 3 years of relevant experience. An equivalent combination of education and experience may also be considered. The ideal candidate should have a strong academic and technical background, with proficiency in quantitative and statistical data analyses. Familiarity with the GEF’s work and data is advantageous. Full proficiency in Excel, including Power Query, is required, along with advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office products such as Word and PowerPoint. Proficiency in programming and statistical software like R, Python, and STATA is essential, as well as knowledge of AI tools and machine learning applications in data analysis.

Educational Background:
The educational requirement for this position is a Master’s degree in a relevant field such as Environmental Economics, Data Science, Statistics, Environmental Management, Sustainable Development, or a closely related discipline. This educational background is crucial for understanding the complexities of environmental data and analytics, as well as for effectively contributing to the GEF's mission.

Experience:
Candidates should have a minimum of 3 years of related experience in data analysis, environmental economics, or a similar field. This experience should demonstrate a strong ability to conduct quantitative and qualitative analyses, manage complex datasets, and apply statistical methods to real-world problems. Experience working with international development or environmental finance datasets is a plus, as is familiarity with the GEF's objectives and operations.

Languages:
The mandatory language for this position is English, with excellent written and verbal communication skills required. Candidates should be able to present and summarize ideas clearly and concisely. While English proficiency is essential, knowledge of additional languages may be considered beneficial but is not explicitly required.
