The Gender is My Agenda Campaign (GIMAC) Network, hosted and coordinated by FAS, comprises over 55 civil society organizations dedicated to advancing gender equality and women's rights, particularly in the context of the African Union (AU). Established during the transformation of the Organization of African Unity (OAU), the GIMAC Network has played a crucial role in advocating for women's participation in AU decision-making processes and monitoring member states' commitments to gender equality, including the implementation of the Solemn Declaration on Gender Equality in Africa (SDGEA).
Job Overview: The consultant will primarily be responsible for the coordination and management of activities and events aligned with the overall GIMAC agenda. This role involves coordinating advocacy efforts and maintaining effective communication between the GIMAC Network, key stakeholders, and participants, with a particular focus on integrating young women's voices into AU processes. The consultant will be expected to develop a detailed work plan, submit progress reports, and deliver a comprehensive final report summarizing all completed activities against the original work plan. This position requires a proactive approach to ensure that the GIMAC Network's objectives are met and that the voices of young women are effectively represented in discussions and decisions at the AU level.
Duties and Responsibilities: The consultant's duties and responsibilities include:
Developing a detailed work plan that outlines specific tasks, timelines, and key milestones for the consultancy.
Coordinating and managing activities and events related to the GIMAC agenda, ensuring alignment with the overall objectives of the network.
Facilitating effective communication and collaboration between the GIMAC Network, stakeholders, and participants.
Integrating young women's perspectives and voices into AU processes and discussions.
Preparing and submitting a mid-term progress report that details completed activities and includes supporting documents.
Compiling and delivering a comprehensive final report that summarizes all completed activities against the original work plan, along with all necessary supporting documents.
Reporting to the Monitoring and Evaluation Specialist at the UN Women Liaison Office to the AU and UNECA, while ensuring that all reports and documents are reviewed by Femmes Africa Solidarité (FAS).
Required Qualifications: The required qualifications for this position include:
A strong commitment to the core values of GIMAC, including integrity, fairness, and respect for diversity.
Demonstrated ability to manage complex programs and engage diverse stakeholders effectively.
Strong understanding of gender equality and youth empowerment issues in the African context.
Proven ability to communicate effectively across languages and cultural contexts.
Experience in building and maintaining relationships with key stakeholders, including AU bodies, donors, and civil society actors.
Ability to work in diverse environments and treat all individuals fairly and with respect.
Educational Background: The educational background required for this position includes a Master's degree in social sciences, gender studies, development studies, or a related field. Alternatively, a first-level university degree combined with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
Experience: Candidates should have at least 5 years of relevant experience in gender equality, youth advocacy, or network coordination. Previous experience with UN Women, GIMAC, or other civil society organizations (CSOs) working with the AU is considered an advantage. Additionally, candidates should have demonstrated experience in organizing and facilitating training, workshops, and conferences, along with strong knowledge of gender issues and youth empowerment in the African context.
Languages: Fluency in English and French, both written and spoken, is mandatory for this position. Proficiency in additional languages may be considered an asset but is not required.
Additional Notes: This consultancy is home-based, allowing for flexibility in work arrangements. The consultant will be expected to adhere to UN Women’s policies and procedures, including a zero-tolerance policy on conduct incompatible with the aims and objectives of the United Nations and UN Women.
