Job Overview:
The Public Information Officer will play a crucial role in the Communications and Public Mobilization Section, focusing on raising awareness and mobilizing global public support for racial equality as outlined in Resolution 54/2
  • The officer will be responsible for implementing information programs that publicize priority issues and major events, which includes drafting information strategies, coordinating efforts, monitoring progress, and analyzing outcomes. The role requires a proactive approach to content development and outreach advocacy, ensuring that communications strategies align with the campaign objectives. The officer will also monitor current events and public opinion, advising management on appropriate responses to emerging issues. This position demands a high level of creativity and strategic thinking to effectively promote media coverage and engage with key constituencies, including civil society.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Public Information Officer will have a wide range of responsibilities, including:
  • Implementing campaigns to raise awareness about racial equality and related issues.
  • Developing and executing information programs to publicize priority issues and major events.
  • Leading content development and outreach advocacy efforts based on the communications strategy.
  • Monitoring and analyzing public opinion and press coverage, advising management on necessary actions.
  • Promoting media coverage through press conferences, interviews, and other activities, including developing media strategies and action plans.
  • Producing various communication products such as press kits, press releases, and articles.
  • Monitoring social media for challenges related to racial discrimination and advising on responses.
  • Drafting articles and reports based on official UN documentation.
  • Building and maintaining professional relationships with key stakeholders. 1
  • Providing guidance and supervision to junior staff members.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a comprehensive understanding of communications approaches, tools, and methodologies essential for effective campaign strategies. They should demonstrate the ability to analyze diverse information rapidly, identify public affairs issues, and handle sensitive situations diplomatically. Strong writing skills are essential, as is the ability to deliver presentations effectively. Candidates should also show a commitment to gender perspectives and equal participation in all areas of work.

Educational Background:
An advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in communication, journalism, international relations, public administration, or a related field is required. Alternatively, a first-level university degree combined with two additional years of qualifying work experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree.

Experience:
A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in public information, journalism, international relations, or public administration is required. Candidates should have experience managing large-scale information campaigns and developing communications strategies related to human rights. It is desirable to have at least three years of this experience with an international organization, as well as experience in writing journalistic pieces in English and working on issues related to racism and racial discrimination.

Languages:
Fluency in English, both oral and written, is required. Knowledge of French or Spanish is desirable, and knowledge of another UN official language is considered an advantage.

This position is temporarily available for 11 months, subject to the availability of funds. The temporary assignment provides an opportunity for the successful applicant to gain new work experience, but it does not guarantee future employment in the same position.
