Job Overview:
The Copy Editor Consultant will play a crucial role in enhancing the quality and clarity of documents produced by the Economic Empowerment Section at UN Women. This position involves editing, copyediting, and proofreading a variety of materials, including reports, policy briefs, and research papers, ensuring they adhere to UN Women's style guidelines. The consultant will work closely with the Care and Macroeconomics Team, contributing to the production of high-quality materials that effectively communicate UN Women's initiatives and objectives. The role requires a keen eye for detail, strong editing skills, and the ability to ensure consistency in language and tone across all written outputs. The consultant will also be responsible for fact-checking and verifying data, advising on document improvements, and ensuring the use of gender-inclusive language. This consultancy is expected to start in April 2025 and conclude in December 2025, with no travel required as the position is home-based.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The consultant will be responsible for the following tasks:
  • Review and edit documents produced by the Care and Macroeconomics Team, including reports, policy briefs, research papers, proposals, and other communication materials, ensuring they are high-quality, clear, coherent, accessible, accurate, and align with UN Women's style and messaging guidelines.
  • Conduct thorough fact-checking and verification of data, figures, and references in reports and other publications.
  • Advise on improving documents to make them more reader-friendly and visually appealing where appropriate.
  • Ensure consistency in language, tone, and style across all written materials, while conducting quality assurance to identify areas for improvement in structure, language, and presentation, enhancing clarity, impact, and overall effectiveness.
  • Ensure the use of gender-inclusive language in line with UN Women's style and messaging guidelines.
  • Adjust writing styles to meet the needs of various formats and target audiences.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a Master's degree or equivalent in English, Journalism, Communications, Social Sciences, or related fields. Alternatively, a first-level university degree combined with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree. Additionally, candidates should have at least 5 years of editorial experience, particularly in gender equality and women's empowerment. Proven experience in written communications and editorial skills is required, along with a portfolio demonstrating a track record of editing documents on topics related to gender equality, economic empowerment, and development. Experience in editing documents related to gender macroeconomics and care is considered an asset, as is familiarity with UN Women’s work and style guides.

Educational Background:
A Master's degree or equivalent in English, Journalism, Communications, Social Sciences, or related fields is required. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Experience:
Candidates should have a minimum of 5 years of editorial experience, with a focus on gender equality and women's empowerment. Proven experience in written communications and editorial skills is essential, along with a portfolio that showcases editing work on relevant topics. Experience in gender macroeconomics and care-related documents is advantageous, as is familiarity with UN Women’s work and style guides.

Languages:
Excellent command of English (oral and written) is mandatory. Knowledge of additional languages such as French, Spanish, Arabic, or any other UN official language is considered an asset.
