Job Description
Job Posting Organization:
The International Labour Organization (ILO) is a specialized agency of the United Nations that aims to promote social justice and fair labor practices worldwide. Established in 1919, the ILO has a mission to ensure that labor standards are upheld and that workers' rights are protected. The organization operates in over 180 countries and has a diverse workforce of approximately 3,300 employees. The ILO is committed to promoting decent work for all, and its programs focus on various aspects of labor rights, including employment, social protection, and labor relations.

Job Overview:
The internship program at the ILO provides an opportunity for students and recent graduates to gain practical experience in international labor issues. Interns will engage directly with the work of the ILO and contribute to the implementation of its principles, programs, and strategies. The internship is designed to enhance the understanding of relevant international issues while allowing interns to apply their academic knowledge in a professional setting. Interns will be involved in various tasks related to the Department of International Labour Standards (NORMES), which oversees the implementation of labor conventions and monitors compliance among member states. This role is ideal for individuals seeking to deepen their knowledge of labor rights and international standards while gaining valuable experience in a multicultural environment.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Interns will be expected to contribute to the examination of observations submitted by employers' and workers' organizations regarding labor standards. They will prepare drafts of comments for submission to the Committee of Experts and assist in reviewing national labor legislation in light of international labor conventions and standards. Interns will also conduct comparative analyses based on these conventions and standards. Additionally, they should anticipate spending about 10% of their time on administrative tasks, which may include organizing documents, assisting with meetings, and supporting the overall operations of the department.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must meet several qualifications to be eligible for the internship. They should not have any close relatives working at the ILO, must not have previously interned at the ILO, and should be enrolled in or have completed a master's or doctoral program within the past year. A practical knowledge of English, both oral and written, is mandatory. Furthermore, candidates should demonstrate adaptability to an international, multicultural, and multilingual environment, possess strong communication skills, and be able to work effectively in a team setting.

Educational Background:
The educational background required for this internship includes a bachelor's degree in law or a related field. Candidates must be enrolled in a master's program or have completed such a program within the last year. This educational foundation is essential for understanding the complexities of international labor standards and the legal frameworks that govern them.

Experience:
While prior work experience is not strictly required, candidates should have a strong academic background and relevant coursework that aligns with the responsibilities of the internship. Experience in research, analysis, or any related field will be considered an asset, particularly if it pertains to labor rights or international relations.

Languages:
A practical knowledge of English is mandatory for this position. Additionally, proficiency in other official ILO languages, such as French or Spanish, is considered advantageous. Knowledge of any other working languages would also be beneficial, as the ILO operates in a multilingual environment.

Additional Notes:
The internship contract will last between 3 to 6 months, starting on either the 1st or 15th of the month. Interns will receive a monthly stipend of 2450 CHF, unless they are receiving funding from another institution, in which case the ILO will cover the difference to ensure the stipend remains at 2450 CHF. Interns will also receive an additional monthly contribution of 45 CHF towards medical insurance expenses during the internship period. Candidates from underrepresented countries may be eligible for financial assistance for travel expenses to Geneva. It is important to note that the ILO does not cover any personal expenses incurred during the internship, and candidates are advised to secure their own health and accident insurance for the duration of their stay.
