Job Overview: This internship is designed to provide a part-time, in-person opportunity within the Exhibits Unit of the Visitors Services Section, Outreach Division, Department of Global Communications at the United Nations in New York City. The Exhibits Unit plays a crucial role in engaging and educating the public about the UN's ideals and activities through thematic and educational exhibits. Interns will be involved in various aspects of exhibit production, including communication and outreach activities, research, and design. Interns will work under the supervision of a staff member and will have the opportunity to contribute to the daily operations of the Exhibits Unit, gaining valuable experience in a dynamic international environment.
Duties and Responsibilities: Interns will be responsible for a range of tasks that support the Exhibits Unit's mission. These duties include:
Assisting in communication and outreach activities related to UN exhibitions, which involves drafting and editing content for the UN Exhibits website and social media platforms, as well as monitoring social media engagement.
Conducting research and compiling materials necessary for the development of UN exhibitions, ensuring that the information is accurate and relevant.
Designing exhibit materials as required, utilizing design software to create visually appealing and informative displays.
Aiding in the planning and organization of exhibit installations and opening events, ensuring that all logistical aspects are managed effectively.
Providing general office support, which includes drafting correspondence, maintaining files and databases, and organizing meetings.
Supporting the overall work of the Visitor Services Section, contributing to a collaborative team environment.
Performing other duties as assigned by the supervisor, which may vary based on the needs of the Unit and ongoing projects.
Required Qualifications: Applicants must meet one of the following criteria: (a) Be enrolled in or have completed the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum bachelor's degree or equivalent), or (b) Be enrolled in or have completed a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent, or higher). While professional work experience is not mandatory for this internship, candidates should have a field of study related to the internship's focus. Proficiency in standard software applications, particularly MS Word and MS PowerPoint, is essential. Additionally, the ability to draft articles and social media posts is desirable, along with familiarity with design software such as Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, and Canva.
Educational Background: Candidates must be students in their final year of a bachelor's degree program, or enrolled in or have completed a master's or Ph.D. program. The educational background should be relevant to the internship's focus, ideally in fields such as communications, design, international relations, or a related discipline. This ensures that interns possess the necessary theoretical knowledge and skills to contribute effectively to the Exhibits Unit's projects.
Experience: While prior professional work experience is not a requirement for this internship, candidates should demonstrate relevant academic experience or coursework that aligns with the responsibilities of the position. This could include internships, volunteer work, or academic projects that showcase skills in research, communication, and design. The emphasis is on the candidate's ability to apply their educational background to the tasks at hand.
Languages: Fluency in spoken and written English is mandatory for this internship, as it is one of the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Knowledge of French is also beneficial, as it is the second working language of the UN. Proficiency in additional languages may be considered an asset, enhancing the candidate's ability to engage with diverse audiences and contribute to the UN's global outreach efforts.
Additional Notes: This internship is part-time and in-person, with the possibility of adjustments based on the successful candidate's requests and the needs of the Exhibits Unit. Interns are expected to work less than 34 hours per week. The internship is unpaid, and candidates are responsible for their own travel, visa, accommodation, and living expenses. Interns must provide their own hardware (computer), software, and internet connection to perform their duties.
