Job Description
Job Posting Organization: The internship is offered by the Energy Division of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP). The organization aims to support member states in enhancing energy security" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">security, facilitating energy transitions, and addressing climate change through regional cooperation. ESCAP was established in 1947 and operates in 62 member countries and territories across the Asia-Pacific region. The organization focuses on achieving the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, particularly Sustainable Development Goal 7 (SDG7), which aims to ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable, and modern energy for all.
Job Overview: The internship with the Energy Division is designed for a period of three to six months, depending on the needs of the Division. Interns will work full-time, five days a week, under the supervision of professional staff. The primary focus of the internship is to support the Energy Division in its mission to enhance energy security and facilitate energy transitions in the Asia-Pacific region. Interns will engage in various research and analytical tasks related to energy challenges, financing, policy development, and the implementation of regional initiatives aimed at achieving SDG
Candidates are encouraged to indicate their specific areas of interest in their applications, which may include energy financing, energy modelling, economic analysis, and sustainable energy practices.
Duties and Responsibilities: Interns will be responsible for a wide range of tasks, including but not limited to:
Conducting research on key energy challenges and solutions related to achieving SDGs, particularly SDG7 targets.
Analyzing good practices in energy financing, pricing, and policies to promote energy affordability and connectivity.
Assisting in the development of project proposals and implementation of the Regional Road Map on Power System Connectivity.
Collecting and processing data related to energy demand and supply at various levels.
Conducting economic analyses of energy access and its socio-economic benefits.
Researching the role of natural gas in achieving SDG7 and its implications for decarbonization.
Investigating the impacts of energy transition on the extractives industry.
Analyzing sustainable cooling strategies and their effects on energy demand.
Maintaining and updating the Asia-Pacific Energy Portal, including data gathering and processing. 1
Supporting knowledge management and communication efforts within the Energy Division.
Required Qualifications: Applicants must meet one of the following criteria: (a) be enrolled in or have completed a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in or have completed the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent). While professional work experience is not required, a field of study closely related to the internship is necessary. Candidates must provide proof of their academic status in their applications.
Educational Background: Candidates should be pursuing or have completed a degree in a field related to energy, economics, environmental science, or a similar discipline. This educational background is essential to ensure that interns can effectively contribute to the research and analysis tasks assigned during the internship.
Experience: While no prior professional work experience is required for this internship, candidates should have relevant academic experience or coursework that aligns with the responsibilities of the internship. This could include research projects, coursework, or volunteer work related to energy, economics, or sustainable development.
Languages: Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship. Knowledge of an additional official UN language, such as French, Arabic, Chinese, Russian, or Spanish, is considered an advantage and may enhance the candidate's application.
