Job Description
Job Posting Organization: The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) is the lead UN agency focused on sexual and reproductive health and rights, aiming to ensure that every pregnancy is wanted, every childbirth is safe, and every young person's potential is fulfilled. Established in 1969, UNFPA operates in over 150 countries and territories, employing thousands of staff dedicated to improving the lives of women and girls worldwide. The organization is committed to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) agenda, particularly in the context of the ongoing challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. UNFPA's mission emphasizes the importance of human rights and gender equality, advocating for the empowerment of women and girls and the elimination of gender-based violence.
Job Overview: The National Intern Programme in Communications and Operations at UNFPA is designed to provide young professionals with valuable learning opportunities while supporting the organization's mission. Interns will work closely with the Programme, Communications, and Operations teams, contributing to various aspects of programme management, monitoring and evaluation, and initiatives focused on sexual and reproductive health, population dynamics, and youth engagement. This role is crucial in enhancing the capacity of these teams and ensuring that UNFPA's strategic goals are met effectively. Interns will gain hands-on experience in a dynamic work environment, learning about the intricacies of UN operations and the importance of effective communication in achieving organizational objectives.
Duties and Responsibilities: Interns will be responsible for supporting various units within UNFPA, including Programme, Monitoring and Evaluation, Integrated Sexual and Reproductive Health, Population Dynamics, Gender Programming, Adolescent and Youth, Operations, and Communications. Specific duties may include assisting in the development and implementation of communication strategies, conducting research and analysis related to programme activities, supporting the preparation of reports and presentations, participating in meetings and workshops, and collaborating with team members on various projects. Interns will also be expected to contribute to the monitoring and evaluation of programme outcomes, ensuring that data is accurately collected and analyzed to inform decision-making processes.
Required Qualifications: Candidates applying for the internship must meet specific qualifications, including being enrolled in a first university degree programme (such as a bachelor's degree) and having completed at least one full academic year, or being enrolled in a postgraduate degree programme. Recent graduates who have completed their degree within the last year are also eligible to apply, provided they can start the internship within one year of graduation. Additionally, candidates enrolled in postgraduate professional trainee programmes may undertake the internship as part of their training. Experience working with development agencies, even in a volunteer capacity, is advantageous, along with strong analytical and writing skills, initiative, and the ability to work harmoniously with diverse teams.
Educational Background: The educational background required for this internship includes enrollment in a university degree programme, either at the undergraduate or postgraduate level. Candidates must have completed at least one full academic year of their studies or have recently graduated. This educational foundation is essential for understanding the complexities of UNFPA's work and contributing effectively to the organization's goals.
Experience: While specific professional experience is not mandatory for this internship, some experience working with development agencies or in related fields is beneficial. This could include volunteer work, internships, or academic projects that demonstrate a commitment to the principles of sexual and reproductive health and rights, as well as an understanding of population dynamics and youth issues.
Languages: Fluency in English is mandatory for this position, as it is the primary working language of UNFPA. Additionally, proficiency in Kinyarwanda is required, given the local context of the internship. Knowledge of other official UN languages, particularly French, is considered an asset and may enhance a candidate's application.
Additional Notes: This internship is unpaid, and interns do not receive a salary or any other form of remuneration from UNFPA. Interns are responsible for covering their living expenses, accommodation, travel, and other requirements. However, a stipend may be provided to help cover basic daily expenses if the intern is not financially supported by an institution or programme. It is also mandatory for interns to have medical insurance for the duration of the internship, and proof of insurance must be submitted before the internship begins. UNFPA promotes a work environment that values gender equality, diversity, and integrity, encouraging applications from underrepresented groups, including women, LGBTQIA+ individuals, and persons with disabilities.
