Job Overview:
The Midwifery Research and Advocacy Officer will be a UN Volunteer working within the Rwanda Association of Midwives (RAM). This role is pivotal in strengthening the association's capacity to advocate for midwifery at the policy level. The officer will lead initiatives aimed at promoting the midwifery profession, conducting operational research, and generating evidence to inform policy decisions. The position requires a proactive approach to engage with various stakeholders, including government bodies and health organizations, to ensure midwifery is prioritized in national health agendas. The officer will also implement strategic communication initiatives to enhance the visibility of midwifery, including campaigns and outreach programs.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties and responsibilities of the Midwifery Research and Advocacy Officer include:
  • Leading advocacy efforts for midwifery at the policy level, including visibility campaigns and promoting career pathways for midwives.
  • Overseeing operational research initiatives to strengthen midwifery practices and inform policy decisions.
  • Representing RAM at high-level policy dialogues and technical working groups to ensure midwifery is prioritized in national health agendas.
  • Implementing strategic communication initiatives, such as radio campaigns and social media engagement, to elevate the midwifery profession.
  • Coordinating RAM’s strategic initiatives, including income-generating activities and member mobilization.
  • Enhancing operational processes to improve the efficiency and sustainability of RAM’s programs.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a valid midwifery practice license from the Rwandan Council of Nurses and Midwives. Additionally, candidates should demonstrate strong advocacy skills, experience in research, and a solid understanding of health policy. Proficiency in strategic communication and the ability to engage with diverse stakeholders are essential. Candidates should also exhibit adaptability, creativity, and professionalism in their approach to work.

Educational Background:
A degree in midwifery, nursing, public health, or a related field is required. Advanced degrees or specialized training in health policy, advocacy, or research methodologies will be considered an asset. Continuous professional development in midwifery practices and health systems is encouraged.

Experience:
Candidates should have a minimum of 2-3 years of relevant experience in midwifery, health advocacy, or public health research. Experience working with non-governmental organizations or in a policy-making environment is highly desirable. Familiarity with the Rwandan health system and midwifery practices will be an advantage.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory, while proficiency in Kinyarwanda is highly desirable. Knowledge of French or other languages may be considered an asset, particularly in engaging with diverse communities and stakeholders.

This position is a UN Volunteer role, which means it is not a salaried position but offers a monthly living allowance to cover basic needs such as housing, utilities, and transportation. The role is full-time and based in Kigali, Rwanda. The UNV Programme emphasizes the importance of volunteer service and aims to provide a secure standard of living for volunteers at their duty stations.
