Job Overview:
The Driver position at UNFPA is crucial for providing reliable and safe transportation services to high-ranking officials, including the Representative and Deputy Representative. The role requires a strong sense of responsibility, discretion, and integrity, as the Driver will often be entrusted with the transportation of sensitive personnel and documents. The Driver is expected to maintain a high level of professionalism and courtesy, demonstrating an ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds. In addition to driving duties, the Driver may also assist with logistical support for office operations, including filing and distribution of materials. This position is not just about driving; it encompasses a broader responsibility to ensure the safety and efficiency of transportation services within the organization.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Driver will be responsible for a variety of tasks, including:
  • Providing reliable and safe driving services for UNFPA officials and visitors, ensuring timely arrivals for meetings and events.
  • Meeting official personnel and visitors at the airport and assisting with visa and customs formalities as needed.
  • Maintaining a thorough understanding of local traffic laws, road conditions, and safety protocols to ensure safe driving practices.
  • Keeping accurate vehicle logs and assisting in the preparation of vehicle maintenance plans.
  • Performing routine maintenance on the assigned vehicle, including minor repairs, oil changes, and ensuring cleanliness.
  • Ensuring that all necessary documents and supplies are available in the vehicle, such as insurance, registration, and first aid kits.
  • Taking appropriate actions in the event of an accident, following organizational protocols.
  • Providing translation services in the local language when required.
  • Assisting with office tasks such as filing, photocopying, and distribution of newsletters. 1
  • Carrying out any other duties as assigned by UNFPA leadership.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a valid driver’s license and have a minimum of three years of work experience as a driver in an international organization, embassy, or UN system, demonstrating a safe driving record. Knowledge of local driving rules, regulations, and defensive driving skills is essential. Additionally, candidates should have skills in minor vehicle repairs and a strong understanding of chauffeur protocol and courtesies.

Educational Background:
The minimum educational requirement for this position is the completion of Secondary Level Education. This foundational education is necessary to ensure that candidates have the basic knowledge and skills required for the role.

Experience:
Candidates should have at least three years of relevant experience as a driver, particularly in international settings such as organizations, embassies, or the UN system. This experience should include a proven track record of safe driving and familiarity with local roads and traffic conditions.

Languages:
Fluency in Spanish is mandatory for this position, as it is the primary language of communication in Panama. Additionally, a working knowledge of English is required. Proficiency in other official UN languages, particularly French and Portuguese, is considered an asset and may enhance a candidate's application.
