Job Overview:
The position involves supporting the UNODC’s Prevention, Treatment and Rehabilitation Section (PTRS) in translating training materials aimed at preventing drug use among youth. The primary focus is on translating the Trainer Manual and Monitoring Tool for the Friends in Focus program, which is designed to empower young people to engage in drug prevention efforts. This role is crucial as it contributes to the dissemination of evidence-based prevention strategies that are tailored for youth, ensuring that the materials are accessible in multiple languages to reach a broader audience. The translation work will facilitate the implementation of the program in various global sites, enhancing the effectiveness of drug prevention initiatives.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Translate the Trainer Manual (83 pages, approximately 33,000 words) from English to French, ensuring accuracy and clarity in conveying the original message.
  • Translate the Monitoring Tool (46 pages, approximately 8,000 words), which includes repetitive questionnaires, maintaining consistency in terminology and style.
  • Translate a 2-page brochure that summarizes the program and its objectives.
  • Collaborate with UNODC staff to clarify any ambiguities in the source material.
  • Ensure that the translations are culturally appropriate and resonate with the target audience.
  • Adhere to deadlines and provide timely updates on the progress of the translation work.

Required Qualifications:
  • Proficiency in English and French, with excellent written communication skills in both languages.
  • Experience in translation, particularly in the fields of health, education, or social sciences.
  • Familiarity with drug prevention and youth engagement strategies is an asset.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to maintain the integrity of the original content.
  • Ability to work independently and manage time effectively to meet deadlines.

Educational Background:
A background in languages, translation, social sciences, public health, or a related field is preferred. Formal education in translation or linguistics is advantageous but not mandatory.

Experience:
Previous experience in translating educational or training materials is highly desirable. Familiarity with the subject matter related to drug prevention or youth programs will be beneficial.

Languages:
Mandatory: Proficiency in English and French. Good to have: Knowledge of additional languages relevant to the target audience may be considered an asset.
