UNDP India’s current Country Programme (2018-2022) is concluding, with a new programme set to begin in 2023, focusing on strong institutions, economic opportunities, and climate-smart solutions.

Job Overview:
The Project Coordinator will lead the Plastic Waste Management project in Mumbai, focusing on collaboration with the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM). This role involves coordinating behavior change campaigns, overseeing operations of the local Material Recovery Facility (MRF), and supporting social inclusion programs for informal waste workers. The Project Coordinator will work closely with diverse stakeholders to develop and implement strategies that enhance sustainable waste management practices while ensuring compliance with regulations and alignment with the Swachh Bharat Mission. The position requires a proactive approach to project management, stakeholder engagement, and the integration of gender-responsive practices into all project components.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Project Strengthening and Execution: Develop and implement an action plan for scaling the Plastic Waste Management model in Mumbai, set KPIs, manage risks, and ensure timely decision-making. Provide leadership to local project partners for operational efficiency.
  • Stakeholder and Partnership Management: Maintain relationships with MCGM, private sector partners, and civil society organizations. Identify new partnership opportunities and organize stakeholder review meetings.
  • MRF Operations and Technical Oversight: Oversee daily operations of MRFs, drive improvements in waste segregation and recycling processes, and collaborate with technical experts for innovations.
  • Behavior Change and Awareness: Provide strategic direction for behavior change campaigns, ensure effective communication materials, and guide local teams in execution and monitoring.
  • Social Inclusion and Gender Mainstreaming: Strengthen programs for the inclusion of Safai Saathis, integrate gender-responsive approaches, and track progress on gender and social inclusion targets.
  • Monitoring, Evaluation and Reporting: Lead the M&E framework, set performance indicators, facilitate review meetings, and produce comprehensive reports on project outcomes and sustainability recommendations.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates should possess strong project management skills, with a proven ability to lead and coordinate complex projects. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are essential for stakeholder engagement and partnership building. The ideal candidate should demonstrate a commitment to sustainable development and social inclusion, particularly in the context of waste management and gender equality.

Educational Background:
A degree in environmental science, social sciences, public administration, or a related field is required. Advanced degrees or certifications in project management or sustainable development are preferred.

Experience:
Candidates should have a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in project management, preferably in the fields of waste management, environmental sustainability, or social inclusion. Experience working with government agencies, NGOs, and community organizations is highly desirable.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory, and proficiency in Hindi or Marathi is an advantage. Knowledge of additional regional languages would be beneficial.

Additional Notes:
This is a national UN Volunteer assignment based in Mumbai. The contract duration is subject to funding availability and satisfactory performance, with no expectation of renewal. The Monthly Volunteer Living Allowance (VLA) is INR 112,590.50, with an exit allowance of INR 9,383.08 for each month served. Health insurance is not provided for dependents, and the UN Volunteer is responsible for arranging their own housing and living essentials. National UN Volunteers are expected to be culturally sensitive and adapt to local customs.
